SARASOTA -- Although no elections took place, Tuesday definitely proved super for local arts organizations.
Sarasota County commissioners approved the $1.2 million Tourist Development Cultural/Arts Grants Awards for fiscal year 2011-12 as submitted by the Arts & Cultural Alliance. The art grant agreements will be prepared and distributed shortly after the completion of a July 28 workshop.
Thirty-three Sarasota County companies are recipients.
The big winners -- organizations receiving between $79,000 and $93,000 -- are Asolo Repertory Theatre, Ringling Museum, Florida Studio Theatre, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Orchestra, the City of Sarasota-owned and operated Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, as well as Venice Little Theatre.
The Sarasota Film Festival has been awarded $51,368 for its community outreach program.
The Players of Sarasota netted just more than $50,000 for its Broadway and summer programs.
Circus Sarasota will receive $45,611 for winter production.
The Golden Apple Dinner Theatre in downtown Sarasota did not qualify for any of the funds because it is a for-profit institution.
In clarifying this with the Herald Wednesday, owner Bob Turoff said: "We're changing from profit to non-profit but the paperwork just hasn't gone through yet."
