Actually, we should say that Texas archery hunters get first crack at deer, sort of.
Although the early archery season begins its month-long run Saturday throughout the state, archers won?t be the only folks out there hunting. Ranches with Managed Lands Deer Permits will also be able to start hunting Saturday.
Something in here just seems not quite right. Either MLDP properties ought to have to pay something for their permits or bowhunters shouldn?t have to pay anything.
Archers long have contended they ?paid? for that special early season with the $7 archery stamp required to hunt during October. but the exclusivity went out the window with MLDPs, which allow hunters to take deer on designated properties with nothing except their license and a free permit issued to the landowner.
There ought to be a change but unless bowhunters begin screaming ? loudly ? there probably won?t be.

RED TIDE ADVANCES ON COAST
With caustic fumes and dead fish, red tide events are traumatic occurrences along the Texas Gulf Coast.
Texas Parks and Wildlife officials currently are monitoring two outbreaks, one on the lower coast and one on the upper coast, that have killed a number of fish so far. Humans close to the red tide areas can experience intense burning in the eyes and respiratory system.
The red tide is actually a microscopic organism that grows during warm weather in coastal waters.
