In early May I was in Japan record shopping. I was looking for some new heat to bring back to the States plus write about and I came across this vinyl piece that embodies what House as a movement is about. This release by Terrence Dixon called The Parkhurst is right up my alley. Dixon showcases his versatility as each track evokes a different feeling that will entice listeners from several different genres.
"City Lights" begins the record with its live drum programming, syncopated bass lines and keyboard work that drones on two chords. Lots of boogie and acid jazz DJs will love this tune as it progresses through time. "Suspended" is next up with a sustained chord that hits throughout with the occasional flurry of percussion. Dubby Techno heads will live to bang this tune. "After Five" ends the A Side with its soft and interesting keyboard work accompanied by some more traditional drum programming that speaks Deep House.
Then Side B begins with the title track of the release called "The Parkhurst". As soon I dropped the needle on the record, my head began to bounce as the acid line moves forward and the strings sound. Ending this project is "Multiply", and Dixon presents straight up Techno for the people with the busy synth lines that filters up and down into a frenzy of banging waveforms. This solid five track release will definitely be destroying dance floors at a club near you soon, or at the very least in a podcast straight into your eardrums.
