Rising Sun-? Despite only having seven players available, Cappel?s Photography defeated Markland Funeral Home in a pair of major league girls softball games Wednesday in the Rising Sun Summer Ball program.?
Cappel took the first game 9-3.? Pitcher Alix DeDreu threw a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in the win which took the pressure off a defense that was limited to just one outfielder.? Markland pitcher Taylor Mullen battled control issues and was charged with the loss.
DeDrue and Ali Bostic started the home first for Cappel with two singles.? DeDreu scored on a wild pitch and Bostic scored when sister Bailee Bostic reached on an error.? Macy Elliott walked, stole a base and touch home for the final run of the inning to make it 4-0 Cappel.
Due to having fewer than nine players, and when the other team has at least nine, Cappel?s was required to start their even numbered innings with one out.? Despite the restriction, Cappel plated a run in the second to make it 5-0 as Ali Bostic doubled and eventually scored when Allie Adams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The home team added three more runs in the third.? DeDreu had her second base hit, Ali Bostic hit her second of three doubles and Bailee Bostic walked for the second of three times.? All three players scored.? DeDrue on the RBI hit by Ali Bostic and the two Bostics by wild pitches.
Markland finally dented the plate in the fourth as Tiffany Vinup reached by error and Taylor Mullen walked to start the frame.? A throwing error on a ball put in play by Kalyn Montgomery brought both runners home as Montgomery made it to third on the play.? DeDrue limited the damage though by striking out the next three Markland players in order.
Leading 8-2, Cappel scored its final run in the fourth as Ali Bostic doubled for a third time and scored on a passed ball to make it 9-2.
Markland managed a run in the fifth as Alex Koons singled with one out.? She went to second on a two out single by Vinup then stole third.? Mullen reached by error that allowed Koons to score.? Montgomery reached via a fielder?s choice to load the bases but the 10th strikeout thrown by DeDreu ended the game for a 9-3 Cappel victory.
Game two was a much tighter contest.? Cappel still won and DeDreu, again, threw 10 strikeouts in the win.? However, Markland bats produced nine hits in a 5-4 defeat.
Cappel was the visiting team in this one and it looked as if it was going to be a scoreless first.? But a costly error resulted in two unearned runs as DeDreu and Elliott were able to eventually score.
Markland could not take advantage of a leadoff double by Jenna Kendrick and it was 2-0 Cappel after the first.
In the second, Ali Bostic hit a two out two bagger and Bailee Bostic brought her home on an RBI single to make it a 3-0 lead.? That margin held as DeDreu struck out the side in the home second.
Alexis Murafski got into the scoring act in the third for Cappel as she walked with one out, was sacrificed to second by DeDreu, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
Markland cut the opposition?s lead down to 4-1 as Kendrick hit a two-out triple to right center and Vinup batted her in on a single to left. ?Markland loaded the bases as Mullen singled to put two on.? Montgomery hit a smash down the third base line but Adams made the defensive play of the game with a backhanded stab and stepped on third to get the final out of the stanza.
Cappel was shut down 1-2-3 in the fourth, or should I say 2-3 as they started the inning with one out.? Markland got another run back in the home fourth as Kendra Bennett singled to right, stole two bases and scored on an error after swiping third.? It was 4-2 Cappel heading into the final inning.
The visitors, trying to take both games of the double header, got a key insurance run in the fifth.? DeDreu got on with a fielder?s choice that saw Murafski get forced out at second.? On the attempted double play, the ball was overthrown to first and DeDreu went to second.? Ali Bostic put the next ball in play and an infield error allowed her to reach but, more importantly, allowed DeDreu to score.? So Cappel?s lead was up to 5-2 going into Markland?s final at bat.
The night before, Markland came from five down in the final inning to erase a four run deficit to win by one.? They almost accomplished a similar comeback in Wednesday night?s second game.? Koons led of with a left side single and Kendrick followed with her third hit of the game.? With one out, Mullen doubled scoring both runners ahead of her to make it 5-4.? Montgomery joined her on the base paths with another hit which put the tying run at third and the winning run at second with only one out.? However, DeDreu tightened the belt and punched out the final two batters to preserve the 5-4 win.
As DeDreu got another well-earned double header win, giving her four wins on the season in two nights, Vinup threw a good game in the loss for Markland.? She allowed just one earned run (five total) on two hits and struck out four.
