Competing Against The Big Guys

Aaron LevieThe narrative of the little guy going up against the hulking giant is baked into the history of Silicon Valley, starting with the?traitorous eight?leaving Shockley Semiconductor to subsequently found Intel, AMD, Kleiner Perkins, and many other industry disruptors of their time.? Fighting unnaturally large battles is part of the technology industry?s DNA, and yet it would seem that every startup begins the process anew, rewriting the story of how to compete and succeed in the face of formidably large competitors. There are times when competing against the incumbent feels like an insurmountable challenge (and by ?times,? I mean pretty much every day). ?Your larger, more established and better-resourced competitor is an ominous and omnipresent danger to your existence.? It will subsidize its products to compete with you, monopolize the distribution channel,?spend more on marketing a single launch?than you will ever raise, and?create uncertainty in the market?about your product among customers.? Given all this, startups should be in an inherently disadvantaged position in any market, emerging or mature.? And in most industries outside of technology ? those that rely on high fixed costs, retail distribution, or a vast network of partners ? this is absolutely the case.? But in the world of internet-delivered services, rapid innovation and evolution, and constant disruption, no one?s power is guaranteed.? This creates huge opportunities for startups going up against the big guys, if executed properly.

Microsoft?s strategy for updating Hotmail

Yesterday whilst being shown the new, soon to be released features of Hotmail I was told about Microsoft?s strategy for updating the webmail service. The strategy previously has been to release updates in waves however that view has changed slightly as Microsoft said ?releasing in waves is good but releasing innovation constantly is better?.

This explains why over the last year there has been a lot of small updates to Hotmail but why there is also this much larger update coming to the service over the next few weeks. Some of the smaller updates have been additional Facebook integration and the aliases feature. Microsoft said that by releasing the smaller updates and features its like ?a little bit of innovation every week?.

As part of this plan Microsoft is keen to focus on new features over new designs. They are more interested in making sure that the user gets the emails they want as seamlessly as possible. Microsoft also want create new features to allow the user to organise their inbox to their own specification rather than spending time working on new icon designs for Hotmail. This view can be seen in the new categories feature and enhancing sweeping functionality which means that ?Hotmail gives 97 out of 100 emails that the user cares about? rather than lots of spam and greymail. This is something Microsoft is proud about and was keen to point out that no other webmail service is focusing on this aspect as much as Microsoft is.

This plan seems to make a lot of sense and its certainly better to have smaller more frequent updates rather than one massive annual update. The same plan also seems to be applicable to SkyDrive too as over the past year they have released several small and only one large update. However, it would appear that Essentials does not conform to this strategy, which is a great shame.

I shall be publishing a post tomorrow about my question and answer session with Hotmail.

(AP Photo/Ron D'Raine, Pool)

(AP) ? If Will and Kate's first child is a girl, it's now clear that she'll probably become queen one day ? and not even getting a little brother can mess that up.

The Commonwealth countries agreed Friday to change centuries-old rules of succession that put sons on the throne ahead of any older sisters. So that hypothetical daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton ? now known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge ? would have a prime place in history: the first princess to beat out any younger brothers and accede to the throne.

Had these rules been in place in the 1500s, Henry VIII would have just been a rather large historical footnote.

The move is a baby step: Before taking effect, the changes still must be approved by the legislatures of the 16 nations where Queen Elizabeth II is head of state. Still, the agreement, which was reached at a meeting of Commonwealth nations in Perth, Australia, represents a triumph over practices now considered outdated and sexist in much of the world.

Nations including Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway have already taken similar steps.

Will and Kate's lavish April wedding renewed a decades-long debate over succession.

Middleton told a well-wisher in Canada this summer that she hopes to start a family. William has said the same.

Once their honeymoon was over, baby talk started, adding urgency to the dialogue, although officials insist that talk of a pregnancy is premature.

Historians think it's about time.

"You shouldn't muck around too much with the constitution, but it's a good idea to change this at this time," said royal expert Hugo Vickers. "It's much better to have it sorted out before any babies come along."

The new rules would only apply to future heirs and would have no impact on the current line of succession.

William is second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles, who is the queen's firstborn child. Charles' sister, Anne, is lower in the line of succession than her younger brothers Andrew and Edward by virtue of their male gender.

Charles had only sons, William and Prince Harry, so the issue of gender was never raised.

In 2009, the government of then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown considered a bill that would end the custom of putting males ahead of females in the succession line. It also would lift a ban on British monarchs marrying Roman Catholics. The government did not have time to pursue it before Brown left office.

The rule has kept women from succeeding to the throne in the past. Queen Victoria's first child was a daughter ? also called Victoria ? but it was her younger brother who became King Edward VII.

If Queen Victoria had been able to pass her crown to her firstborn, Britain's Princess Victoria would have had a brief reign before her death in 1901.

That would have made her son ? Wilhelm II, who at that time was the German Kaiser ? king. With Wilhelm II ruling both Germany and Britain, there may not have been two world wars.

Earlier history might also have been drastically different if women had had equal rights to the throne.

Neither Henry VIII nor Charles I would have been king because both had older sisters who, under the new rules, would have been monarch.

As king, Henry VIII set in motion the creation of the Church of England. His six marriages left an insecure succession ? one sickly son and two princesses, according to the monarchy's official website. Charles I's reign in the 17th century led to a bloody civil war.

Prince William and his wife have been credited with freshening up a staid monarchy, and new succession rules seem to fit right in.

"In this day and age, why should a royal son be more important than a royal daughter?" said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine.

The same goes for the decision Friday in Perth to lift a ban on monarchs marrying Roman Catholics. Critics had called the rule blatantly discriminatory since royals are free to wed Jews, Muslims, Hindus or members of any other religion."Britain is no longer the religious country that it once was," Little said. "While not denigrating the importance of religion, it plays much less of a role now then it did 60 years ago."

Still, some Britons are wary of a Catholic monarch.

"The pope is responsible for some horrors," said Anna Marsh, 73, who was cycling in London.

Her biking buddy Jill Gregory, 71, was fine with the idea ? and also fully in favor of giving firstborn girls an equal right to the throne.

"In terms of ability, I don't think women are any different than men," Gregory said, pointing to the queen and her late mother.

Elizabeth II succeeded her father, King George VI, because he had no sons. If she had had a younger brother, he would have jumped above her in the line of succession.

Prime Minister David Cameron had pushed for the changes, calling it a matter of equality.

New Zealand will now chair a working group of Commonwealth countries to discuss how to accomplish the reforms. It's not a simple process. Getting all 16 countries to begin the legislative changes is what has held them up for decades.

However long it takes, Patricia Wager of London said it would clear up something that should not be an issue in the modern world.

"It's a good idea, and a long time coming," she said.

WSJ best-seller lists to include e-books (AP)

NEW YORK ? The Wall Street Journal has an agreement with Nielsen BookScan to publish best-seller lists that include both physical books and e-sales.

Since 2009, Nielsen has provided the journal with lists based solely on hardcover and paperbacks. The Journal and Nielsen announced Friday that four charts will debut this weekend: combined e-book and physical sales for fiction and nonfiction, and e-sales only for fiction and nonfiction. Eligible releases will include self-published books, children's books and "perennials," older works that continue to sell strongly.

It's the first time that Nielsen has compiled e-books, with Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Apple and Google among those participating. BookScan numbers reflect around 75 percent of hardcover and paperback sales and offer a rare look at raw data from an industry known for being secretive about how much books actually sell. But the Nielsen statistics became increasingly limited as e-sales took off.

"As consumers and booksellers continue to embrace the potential of e-books, we are very happy to be working with The Wall Street Journal to produce the most accurate best-seller charts available," Jonathan Stolper, vice president & general manager of Nielsen BookScan, said in a statement. "These new charts uniquely reflect what people are really buying and reading and will most definitely advance the industry's understanding of e-book best sellers."

But the industry, and the public, will have to wait before seeing actual Nielsen numbers under the new system. The lists will feature only rankings, not copies sold. And the data will be available exclusively to the Journal.

The New York Times and USA Today also include e-sales in their weekly lists.

W. Va. mine ex-security chief convicted in deadly disaster case (Reuters)

CHARLESTON, West Virginia (Reuters) ? The former security chief at a mine where 29 miners died last year was convicted of two felonies on Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Hughie Elbert Stover, 60, of Clear Fork, West Virginia, was convicted by a federal jury of making false statements to federal agents and obstructing a federal investigation.

Stover was charged in February with giving false statements to FBI and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigators, and with obstructing a federal investigation into the cause of the Upper Big Branch disaster.

An explosion at the mine, owned by the now-defunct Massey Energy, killed 29 miners in April 2010.

During the investigation Stover allegedly told FBI and MSHA investigators that mine security guards did not warn mine personnel when MSHA inspectors were on their way to the mine.

Investigators discovered that Stover himself warned mine personnel when inspectors were on their way. Stover also allegedly instructed another person to destroy thousands of Massey Energy documents related to the UBB mine.

"Today's verdict sends a clear message that when a person obstructs an investigation, especially an investigation as important as this one, there will be consequences," said U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin.

Sentencing for Stover will take place February 29, 2012, in Beckley, West Virginia.

Another former Massey employee, Thomas Harrah, pleaded guilty in April to making false statements on documents and making false statements to FBI and MSHA investigators after passing himself off as a mine foreman, though he failed the foreman's exam. Both are felonies.

Massey was bought by Alpha Natural Resources earlier this year. Three reports, including a preliminary report by MSHA and a report released on Tuesday by the United Mine Workers of America blame Massey for disaster by allowing unsafe conditions in the mine.

Islamists to rule Tunisia; clashes in cradle of revolt (Reuters)

TUNIS (Reuters) ? The leader of the Islamist party which won Tunisia's first free election appealed for calm in the town where the "Arab Spring" began, accusing forces linked to the ousted president of fanning violence there.

Party officials said coalition talks were already under way and they expected to form a new government within 10 days.

Troops fired in the air on Friday to disperse a crowd attacking government offices in Sidi Bouzid, where 10 months ago vegetable seller Mohamed Bouazizi set fire to himself in a protest that ignited revolts around the Arab world.

The Ennahda party, which was banned for decades and its leaders forced to flee abroad, will lead Tunisia's new government after an election victory likely to set a template for other Middle Eastern states rocked by uprisings this year.

Ennahda has tried to reassure secularists by stressing it will not impose a Muslim moral code.

It will not impose the wearing of the Islamic headscarf, or hijab, on women because all attempts to do that in other Arab states have failed, the party's leader said on Friday.

Rachid Ghannouchi said women would have jobs in the new government "whether they wear a veil or don't wear a veil".

Ennahda would honor an undertaking to finish writing a new constitution within one year, he said at his first news conference since the election. It would respect all Tunisia's international treaties when it forms a new government.

He blamed the Sidi Bouzid clashes on forces connected with ousted president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali.

The unrest was not linked directly to the Ennahda win, but to the fact that a party headed by a businessman popular in the town, a former supporter of Ben Ali, had been eliminated from the ballot over allegations of campaign finance violations.

UNREST IN TOWN OF "MARTYR"

Two witnesses in Sidi Bouzid told Reuters a large crowd had tried to attack the local government headquarters.

"The military are trying to disperse the people with shots in the air and tear gas," one of the witnesses, Attia Athmouni, said by telephone.

The witnesses said shops and schools were shut and a security forces helicopter was hovering overhead.

Late on Thursday, after officials announced they would cancel several seats won by the Popular List, a crowd set fire to an Ennahda office and the office of the mayor. The party had been running in fourth place in the election, according to preliminary results, before its seats were canceled.

An Interior Ministry source said a night curfew would be imposed in the town from 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) until 5 a.m.

Ghannouchi paid tribute to the town's role in the revolution which forced Ben Ali to flee the country.

"We salute Sidi Bouzid and its sons who launched the spark and we hope that God will have made Mohamed Bouazizi a martyr," said the Islamic scholar, who spent 22 years exiled in Britain.

Announcing the results, election commission members said Ennahda had won 90 seats in the 217-seat assembly, which will draft a new constitution, form an interim government and schedule new elections, probably for early 2013.

The Islamists' nearest rival, the secularist Congress for the Republic, won 30 seats.

TURKISH PM IS MODEL

The complex election system that replaced the rigged, one-horse races conducted before the revolution made it impossible for one party to win a majority of seats. Ennahda is expected to form a government with two of the secularist runners-up.

The Islamists have already said they will put forward Hamadi Jbeli, Ghannouchi's deputy and a former political prisoner, for the post of prime minister. Jbeli said on Friday the economy would take priority in coalition negotiations.

"We are going to speed up to build the new government," he said. "It will take between a week and 10 days."

Ghannouchi told Reuters in an interview he would pursue a liberal economic policy, including making the dinar currency convertible. [nL5E7LS2ZF]

Ennahda lies at the moderate end of the spectrum of Islamist parties in the Middle East. Ghannouchi models his approach on the that of Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

His officials say there will be no restrictions on foreign tourists -- a big source of revenue -- drinking alcohol or wearing bikinis on the country's Mediterranean beaches.

The victory is the first for Islamists since the Hamas faction won a Palestinian election seven years ago.

It will resonate in Egypt, where a party with ideological ties to Ennahda is expected to do well in a multi-stage parliamentary poll that starts in November.

One of the party's most prominent candidates is a businesswoman who does not wear the Islamic veil, or hijab, and this week sang along to pop songs at a party rally.

Ennahda has also reached out to anxious investors by saying it will not impose Islamic banking rules. It says it is inclined to keep the finance minister and central bank governor in their posts when it forms the new government.

Spain: Basque independence group cleared for vote (AP)

MADRID ? Spain's justice minister says the government will refrain from trying to bar a Basque pro-independence coalition from fielding candidates in Nov. 20 general elections.

Francisco Caamano said in a radio interview Wednesday that police who investigated the coalition called Amaiur have found no evidence its candidates have links to the outlawed political wing of the separatist group ETA.

ETA last week announced it was giving up violence as a tool for achieving Basque independence, after 43 years of shooting and bombings that killed 829 people.

The center-right opposition Popular Party is expected to sweep the general election next month and oust a Socialist government saddled with a 21 percent jobless rate, weak prospects for economic growth and debt woes.

London goes to court to evict St. Paul's protest (AP)

LONDON ? Church and local government authorities are going to court to evict anti-capitalist protesters camped outside St. Paul's Cathedral ? though officials acknowledged Friday it could take weeks or months to get an order to remove the tent city.

As the iconic church reopened after a weeklong closure triggered by the protest, the City of London Corporation said it was launching legal action on the grounds that the protest is an "unreasonable user of the highway." Scores of tents are pitched on the pedestrianized square in front of the cathedral and near a footpath alongside the building.

"Protest is an essential right in a democracy ? but camping on the highway is not and we believe we will have a strong highways case because an encampment on a busy thoroughfare clearly impacts the rights of others," said Michael Welbank, a member of the corporation's planning and transportation committee.

St. Paul's Cathedral said it agreed that "legal action has regrettably become necessary."

The cathedral's governing body said in a statement that it "takes this step with the greatest reluctance and remains committed to a peaceful solution."

Several hundred protesters against economic inequality and corporate greed have been camped outside the building since Oct. 15, inspired by New York's Occupy Wall Street movement. On Oct. 21 cathedral officials shut the building, saying the campsite represented a health and safety hazard.

It was the first time the 300-year-old church, one of London's best-known buildings, had closed since German planes bombed the city during World War II.

After the campers agreed to rearrange their tents the cathedral reopened Friday with a special Eucharist service attended by hundreds of people, including some of the protesters.

"Today we rejoice that we are once again able to worship in an open cathedral," Dean of St. Paul's Graeme Knowles told worshippers.

The protest has divided managers of the cathedral. Some have called for the protesters to leave, but senior clergyman Giles Fraser resigned Thursday, saying he feared moves to evict the camp could end in violence.

Fraser Dyer, a chaplain at St. Paul's Cathedral, quit his post on Friday, citing the church's decision to instigate legal action against the protesters. "I am left feeling embarrassed by the position the Dean and Chapter have taken," he wrote in a resignation letter posted to his website.

Former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey on Friday also criticized the cathedral's handling of the protest, saying the situation had become a "debacle" that could hurt Christianity's image.

"My paramount concern throughout has been that the reputation of Christianity is being damaged by the episode, and, more widely, that the possibility of fruitful and peaceful protest has been brought into disrepute," Carey wrote in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Prime Minister David Cameron Friday called for the stalemate to be resolved. He said he supported the right to protest, but this did not include "the freedom to pitch a tent almost anywhere you want to in London."

"I have a feeling that if you or I decided to pitch a tent in the middle of Oxford Street we'd be moved on very quickly," Cameron told reporters at a Commonwealth summit in Perth, Australia. "It's vitally important places like St. Paul's Cathedral are open to the public."

Getting a court order to evict the protesters could be a lengthy process, complicated by the tangled ownership of this medieval patch of London, which has been the site of a cathedral dedicated to St. Paul for 1,400 years. Christopher Wren's domed landmark was built to replace an earlier building destroyed in the Great Fire of London and became a symbol of the city's endurance after it survived the World War II Blitz.

Conservative legislator Mark Field, who represents the district in Parliament, welcomed the legal action, saying the area in front of the world-famous building had become "like a Third World shantytown."

"I think they are doing the right thing to try and get these people removed, but it's going to be a long process," he told the BBC.

Mobb Deep Up For Jay-Z Collabo, Despite Past Beef

'It's just hip-hop, man,' Prodigy tells MTV News' 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Time heals all wounds. After Jay-Z and Mobb Deep squared off lyrically in 2001, it was hard to imagine that the rap titans would ever get to a place where they would even consider a collaboration.

Nothing is in the works, but after working with Roc Nation's Jay Electronica, Mobb Deep told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway that they'd be open to the idea of working with Hov.

"Tell [Jay-Z] to get in the studio," Prodigy said when he and his partner Havoc appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live." "He gotta come to Infamous Studios in Queens, though."

Though the two acts threw quite a few barbs at each other, most notably on Jay-Z's "Takeover" and Mobb Deep's "Crawlin' " 10 years ago, Prodigy was recently featured on a track with Hov's signee, Jay Electronica, on his "Call of Duty" track.

On the song's hook, Prodigy even spits, "Put your diamonds in the sky, wave 'em side to side/ Get juxed for your shine," a double-sided lyric that evokes the spirit of a robbery and makes a play on Jay's diamond-shaped hand gesture that he throws up at all his shows.

Mobb Deep even recorded the song at Jigga's Roc Da Mic studios in Manhattan; they clearly harbor no ill will. After Electronica attempted to reach Prodigy on Twitter, the Queens MC got the word that the Hov protégé wanted to work alongside him. "I just got mad phone calls. I woke up late that morning, and everybody was blowin' me up like, 'Yo, Jay Electronica is trying to get in the studio right now,' " Prodigy recalled. "So we just went and knocked it out."

Mobb Deep also plan to get together with J. Cole, another Jay-Z signee. "I was on the phone with J. Cole like the next day, congratulating him on his album and all that," Prodigy said of his conversation with the Cole World MC. "We're supposed to be doing some work together too."

For Mobb Deep, it isn't about beef; instead, the duo are at a place in their careers where all they want to do is make quality tunes. "It's just hip-hop, man, making good songs. Everything else is irrelevant, man," Prodigy stated. "All the feelings and dudes wanna act feminine, put that to the side, man."

Do you hope Mobb Deep and Jay-Z team up? Let us know in the comments!

Police: Father of smothered TN twins not fiance

(AP) ? A detective says a mother accused in the smothering deaths of her newborn twins told him the babies' father might not be her fiance and that DNA tests proved it.

Twenty-five-year old Lindsey Lowe sobbed audibly Tuesday as Hendersonville Police Det. Steve Malach described how Lowe had told him of the affair in December and January.

Lowe's attorney, John Pellegrin, said after the hearing that it was the first time Lowe had heard the results of the paternity test.

Lowe is charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Malach testified that Lowe told him she covered the mouths of the infants after giving birth on Sept. 12 so that her parents would not hear their cries.

The case was sent to the grand jury.

Aerosmith's Tyler falls, Paraguay concert delayed (Reuters)

ASUNCION (Reuters) ? Steven Tyler, the lead singer of rock band Aerosmith, had a "small accident" on Tuesday that forced him to postpone a planned show in Paraguay by one day, a spokesman for the local concert organizers said.

Tyler received stitches and had emergency dental work done during a nearly four-hour stay at the La Costa medical center in Paraguay's capital, according to a hospital statement. He was in good condition when discharged.

The 63-year-old frontman reportedly suffered cuts to his face and lost two of his teeth after falling in his hotel bathroom, the country's largest newspaper ABC said.

Aerosmith planned to perform in the South American nation of Paraguay on Tuesday during a tour through Latin America.

"Mr. Tyler had a small accident that prevents him from staging the concert tonight," Marcelo Antunez, a spokesman for the local concert organizers, told reporters.

"He is fine, he's in his hotel but he's not able to do the concert," Antunez said, adding the show would be postponed until Wednesday.

Nicolas Garzia, whose firm organized the Paraguay gig, said via Twitter that Tyler had been dehydrated and was suffering gastrointestinal problems.

A man who identified himself as Gustavo Perez, a bellboy at the Bourbon hotel near Asuncion, told local radio that Tyler slipped when he was taking a shower and "had a nasty fall."

Two years ago, Tyler broke his shoulder after falling off the stage during a concert in South Dakota, forcing the group to scrap the rest of its North American tour that summer and aggravating tensions within the band.

Tyler has signed up for a second season as a judge on the singing talent show "American Idol" and he published a memoir this year called "Does this Noise in My Head Bother You?"

SAT Officials To Testify At NY Cheating Ring Hearing

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. ? A state Senate subcommittee is holding hearings on Long Island in the wake of an SAT cheating scandal.

Kurt M. Landgraf, president and CEO of Princeton, N.J.-based Educational Testing Service, and Gaston Caperton, president of The College Board, are among those who will testify Tuesday before the Senate's higher education committee.

Sen. Kenneth LaValle, the committee's chairman, announced the hearing at Farmingdale College after seven current or former students at Great Neck North High School were arrested last month. Authorities said six of the students had a seventh to take their SAT exams for them.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice was invited to testify but declined. Her office is investigating cheating at other high schools and says it would be improper to comment until arrests are made.

Video: Japan?s Defense Ministry Develops Awesome Ball-Shaped Drone

Picture 2The world got a first glimpse of the "world's first spherical flying machine" back in June this year, but its maker, Japan's Ministry of Defense, decided it's time to showcase it publicly a few days ago in Tokyo. And as you can see in the video embedded below, their ball drone is pretty awesome. The drone can stand still in mid-air, fly vertically and horizontally through narrow spaces at up to 60km/h, and (which is very cool) keep on moving when it hits the ground or a wall. Thanks to three gyro sensors in its body, the machine can keep also flying even if it's hit by an obstacle.

Wild night for Jackson as Cardinals lose 4-0 (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? For Edwin Jackson, the mound in Texas really was the wild, wild West.

Jackson walked seven ? the most in a World Series game in 14 years ? and Mike Napoli followed the last two free passes with a three-run homer on reliever Mitchell Boggs' first pitch to give the Rangers and Derek Holland a 4-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night.

"It's just a matter of time before they catch up with you," Jackson said.

Instead of sending Chris Carpenter to the mound against C.J. Wilson on Monday night with a chance to clinch their 11th title, the Cardinals find themselves in the first World Series since 2003 that's tied at two games apiece. That ensures a return to Busch Stadium for Game 6 on Wednesday.

"If you want to choose somebody from the St. Louis Cardinals to pitch that game, it's Chris," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said. "We love playing behind him because we know he's going to compete as hard as he can. He's got a lot to compete with."

A night after piling up 16 runs and 15 hits, the Cardinals had two hits ? their fewest in the Series since Boston's Jim Lonborg one-hit them in Game 2 in 1967. Holland pitched 8 1-3 innings and Neftali Feliz finished the 19th Series two-hitter, sending the Cardinals to the biggest Series one-game drop in runs since the 1936 Yankees beat the Giants 18-4 in Game 2 at the Polo Grounds, then won 2-1 at Yankee Stadium the next day.

"It was just a great performance," said Lance Berkman, who singled and doubled for both St. Louis hits. "That's why they say momentum is only as good as the next day's starting pitcher."

A night after tying World Series records with three home runs, five hits and six RBIs, Albert Pujols was 0 for 4 ? batting with no one on base his first three times up, then flying out against Feliz with two on for the second out in the ninth.

"I thought he put a nice stroke on the ball with Feliz. He hits that ball in the gap, we might have some fun," La Russa said. "They worked us over. Nobody centered the ball except Lance."

Berkman went 2 for 3 and improved to 7 for 15 (.467) in this World Series and 12 for 28 (.429) overall in Series play, including his appearance for Houston in 2005.

Jackson has had a wild streak throughout his career. He walked eight in his third major league start, at San Francisco in 2003. He then matched that on June 25 last year, when he finished one shy of the record for walks in a no-hitter as he pitched Arizona over Tampa Bay 1-0.

Hits weren't much of a problem. Jackson allowed three in 5 1-3 innings ? including none after the second. He went to three-ball counts on four of his first 10 batters with the help of some long outs ? four flyouts at or just in front of the warning track. He threw just 59 of 109 pitches for strikes.

"I thought he pitched really well," La Russa said. "He missed a few times, walked a couple guys, but he kept making pitches. Overall I give him a huge plus for keeping us in the game."

The seven walks were three shy of the Series record, set by the New York Yankees' Bill Bevens in Game 4 in 1947 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. No one had walked seven in the Series since Florida's Livan Hernandez had eight in Game 5 in 1997 against Cleveland.

Jackson said he felt squeezed by plate umpire Ron Kulpa.

"When you're all over the place, you can't always expect to get close pitches," Jackson said.

Berkman also said the strike zone helped Holland at times.

"Especially early, he got some borderline pitches, though. If they go the other way, it might make a difference," Berkman said. "But you don't want to take anything away from the job that he did. Just a great pitching performance."

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre made a leaping catch on Rafael Furcal's liner to start the game. It turned out to be that kind of night for the Cardinals.

Texas, which has not lost consecutive games since Aug. 23-25 against Boston, was ahead after 10 pitches from Jackson. That ended the Cardinals' streak of scoring first in 10 straight postseason games, one short of the record set by Detroit from 1972-84.

Elvis Andrus singled sharply to left with one out and Josh Hamilton, just 1 for 12 (.083) coming in, doubled down the right field line.

Mitch Moreland, inserted at first base after Napoli's struggles on Saturday, wound up helping to save a run in the second. Berkman doubled to the right-center gap with one out and, after David Freese struck out, Yadier Molina hit a grounder off the front of the mound. Second baseman Ian Kinsler ranged to the shortstop side of the bag, gloved the ball and made an off-balance throw to first, where Moreland scooped it.

With his pitch count climbing, Jackson walked Nelson Cruz and David Murphy with one out in the sixth. Napoli greeted Boggs by sending a 95 mph fastball just inside the left-field foul pole, about 10 rows deep.

"I think he was ready to hit. I was aggressive, trying to go right at him, and one ran in on him," Boggs said. "I left it up and he was able to get out in front of it."

In their first-row seats, former President George W. Bush and Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan exchanged a high-five. On the mound, Boggs grimaced.

"Now it's a best out of three. See who can win two games," Pujols said. "At the end, that's who is going to be raising the trophy. It's not going to be easy."

NOTES: Bush, a former Rangers owner, threw the ceremonial first pitch to Ryan, the Hall of Fame pitcher. Bush stood in front of the rubber, and his ball went over the right-handed batter's box, bounced off Ryan's catcher's mitt and glanced off a photographer. Rangers manager Ron Washington and players heckled Ryan. ... Twenty-two of 40 teams to win Game 4 and tie the Series at 2 have gone on to the championship. The Series had not been 2-all since 2003, when the Marlins overcame a 2-1 deficit to beat the Yankees in six games. ... For the second time in three years, baseball and NFL teams from the same cities met on the day of a World Series game, with the Dallas Cowboys defeating the St. Louis Rams 34-7 across the street. In 2009, the Yankees won 7-4 at the Phillies as the Eagles routed the Giants 40-17 across the street in Philadelphia.

Decipher the presidential race with these iPhone apps (Appolicious)

Between Presidential hopeful Herman Cain?s 9-9-9 plan, Mitt Romney?s skinny jeans and Michelle Bachmann?s Christian ideology, it?s hard to get a grip on the Republican presidential primary. Add to it President Obama?s re-election bid and the mixed messages of Occupy Wall Street and it?s a wonder that anyone knows how they are going to vote come November 6, 2012.

The good news is that we all have a little bit of time to figure things out, and there are several clever iPhone apps on the market to make life easier. So take a look at the following. Whether you are learning right or left, or somewhere in between, they will serve you well.

Before delving into the nitty-gritty of 21st century American politics it might behoove you to brush up on its origins. The free Politics ? The Essential College app has the works of the most famous political writers of all times including Aristotle, John Locke, and Niccol? Machiavelli. If any of the candidates quote ?common sense? mid-debate, you will be able to keep pace no problem.

C-SPAN Radio

The C-SPAN Radio app (also free) might also make for a good investment for someone trying to make sense of what is happening in Washington, D.C. It includes live feeds for C-SPAN radio, C-SPAN, C-SPAN 2 and C-SPAN 3. But for non-insiders, we recommend the app?s podcasts, which are broken down into more manageable categories that can be searched by topic or person.

Unsure who represents you in U.S. Congress? The Congress app ($0.99) includes every member of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as critical information such as their political party, contact information, margin of victory in the last election and a short personal bio. Another cool feature is that it includes links to campaign finance tracking websites. Money is a driving force in politics and it?s nice to see where it is coming from.

As anticipation for the 2012 election builds, you are going to want to chose your news sources carefully. We trust you know how to find the traditional newspapers, so we?ll suggest a few others. The free Politico app, like its namesake website, is full of insider news from Capitol Hill. With reporters hitting the campaign trail alongside candidates, it offers lots of smart analysis and commentary. Some of Politico?s best stuff is dissecting how the media itself is covering the race.

The Slate Magazine app (free) is another good alternative to The Washington Post, The New York Times, etc. The editors and writers always seem to find clever, creative angles to news stories that are beaten dry by other journalists. Currently, Slate has some great articles on Cain?s lighting-fast rise in the polls, and the long-term implications of Muammar Gaddafi?s death for political stability in the Middle East.

With all sorts of facts and figures flying around, it can be tough to decipher who is telling the truth and who is stretching it. The $1.99 Politifact Mobile app will help you do just that. The app does the leg work for you, fact checking all sorts of statements and soundbites made by the political contenders. The app also tracks the percentage of promises kept by political parties and individual leaders.

Dormant malaria parsites in red blood cells may contribute to treatment failure, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2011) ? Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) College of Public College Health have shown for the first time in a rodent model that the earliest form of malaria parasites can lay dormant in red blood cells and "wake up," or recover, following treatment with the antimalarial drug artesunate.

The study, which appears in the online journal PLoS ONE, suggests that this early-stage dormancy phenomenon contributes to the failure of artesunate alone, or even combined with other drugs, to eliminate the mosquito-borne disease. Alexis LaCrue, PhD, research associate in the USF Department of Global Health, is the lead author of the study, which was funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

The emergence of parasites resistant to artesunate therapy along the Thai-Cambodian border could seriously undermine the success of global malaria control efforts, the World Health Organization has reported.

"There is an urgent public health need to understand why this antimalarial drug resistance is happening and the basis for it, so we can help arrest its spread," said principal investigator Dennis Kyle, PhD, distinguished university health professor at the USF College of Public Health.

"Our study was able to induce the same dormant stage in vivo -- in a rodent malaria model -- that was previously seen only in the test tube," Kyle said. "The work suggests that dormancy is involved in the earliest stage of parasite development in the red blood cells. It may be a new mechanism for how the parasite avoids being wiped out by artemisinin drugs."

When mice infected with rodent malaria parasites were treated with artesunate, dormant parasites were present in their red blood cells 24 hours following treatment. The researchers also found a positive association between the number of dormant parasites present and when malaria infection re-emerged in the mice.

More studies are needed to help explain the mechanism behind the early-stage dormancy and its contribution to treatment failure.

"Now that we have a robust animal model for studying how the parasites become dormant and then recover," Kyle said, "we may be able to change our dosing regimens and investigate drug partners for artemisinin that are better at killing the dormant parasites."

Malaria parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. In humans, they enter red blood cells and start replicating after being released from the disease's first target, the liver. Once parasites escape into the bloodstream, disease symptoms emerge including chills, fever, headache, body aches, vomiting and exhaustion.

Malaria affects 10 percent of the world's population, killing nearly one million people a year in developing countries and crippling their economies. Most who die or become ill are poor pregnant women and children under age 5 in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia and South America.

In addition to LaCrue and Kyle, the study authors were Misty Scheel, Katherine Kennedy and Nikesh Kumar -- all members of the USF Global Infectious Disease Research team.

Bose OE2i

Bose has slowly built a reputation for innovative audio products, from tiny speakers that get extremely loud, to standard-setting noise cancellation technology that many competitors have since mimicked. So when the company releases a simple pair of headphones, it's almost surprising. The Bose OE2i, at $179.95 (direct), offers solid performance and iPhone controls built into the cable. Aside from that, there's not much else to note. The audio quality is quite good, but there are other options in this price range, of both earphone and headphone varieties, that offer more impressive sound performance.

Design
Offered in all black or all white (our test unit was black), the OE2i looks similar to the popular QuietComfort 3 ($349.95, 4 stars).?It's also?a supra-aural headphone pair, which means the cups sit on the ear instead of encircling and enclosing it. The?"OE" in the product name stands for "on ear," and as you might have guessed, there's also a Bose IE2 ($99.95, 4 stars).? The supra-aural design is great for comfort, but not so great for audio leakage?unless you're in a noisy environment, your coworkers or anyone nearby is likely to hear a bit of your music, too.

The headband has ample padding for the top of your head, with metallic adjusting bands that extend or retract on either side. The earcups measure 2.3 by 2 inches, creating a roughly ear-sized oval shape in black plastic with the Bose logo branded across the middle in metallic paint. The insides are lushly padded black leather, just like the QuietComfort 3, with a small mesh opening in the center for sound to pass through. The cable is removable?and thus replaceable, which is a big plus?and connects to the left earcup.

In what's fast becoming a standard, perhaps at Apple's behest, the iPhone controls are located very close to the top of the cable, near your mouth. That's also where the mic is, which makes for clearer voice quality. And indeed, calls sound about as clear as one might expect on the iPhone, which isn't celebrated for its call clarity. However, it makes controlling the iPhone a blind task. You'll have to memorize which buttons are for Volume up or down, Track forward or backward, and so forth. It's fairly easy to accidentally press the wrong button, though Bose takes a little of the guesswork out of it by making the larger middle button, which answers or ends calls (and controls Play/Pause functions), slightly indented compared to the Volume/Tracking buttons.

A carrying pouch, which the headphones collapse and fold flat into for easy toting, is included with the pair. Bose also offers a less expensive model, the $149.95 (direct) OE2, which lacks the iPhone controls but is otherwise identical.

Performance
Not a subtle pair of earphones, the OE2i has boosted high frequencies and a full bass response, which makes it sound particularly good on pop and rock music. At maximum volume on tracks with deep bass, something peculiar happens: The drivers don't distort, even on challenging tracks like The Knife's "Silent Shout," which has a thunderous low end beat. However, the bass response seems too much for the actual earcup enclosures, as they can vibrate and audibly rattle a bit. Simply placing my fingers on the earcups muted the rattling. Once the rattling was gone, it was easy to enjoy clear, strong bass performance.

At more moderate listening levels, the bass sounded quite full and the rattling was never an issue. At times, however, it can sound like the midrange frequencies have been dampened a bit in favor of boosting the bass and, even more so, the high frequencies. This makes for what some might call an overly bright sound on some types of music. That can enhance clarity, and indeed the vocals on most songs stand out a bit more on the OE2i than on other headphone pairs. At times, however, the stringed instruments on John Adams' "The Chairman Dances" sounded a bit brighter and crisper than they needed to. On tracks like this, where bass response is more subtle, the low end seems to disappear a bit. There is no mistaking, however, that this is a headphone pair with a seriously sculpted frequency response?audiophiles seeking flat response, or bass fiends seeking headphones to blast at high volumes, for that matter, should look elsewhere.

The OE2i can't quite match the sonic performance of some similarly priced earphones and headphones. The Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ($179.95, 4.5 stars), a recent Editors' Choice, offer a slightly deeper bass response and the most secure fit you'll find in a pair of earphones. Bowers & Wilkins also makes an on-ear, supra-aural headphone pair, the P5 Mobile Hi-Fi Headphones ($299.95, 4.5 stars) which sound better than either the C5 or the OE2i?but cost significantly more. The Denon AH-D1100 ($199.99,? 4.5 stars) is a circumaural (around-the-ear) headphone option, and, for just $20 more, it offers a significant upgrade in audio performance over the OE2i. If the OE2i and C5 are bit out of your price range, the in-ear Shure SE215 ($119, 4 stars) is another recent Editors' Choice with excellent overall sound performance. Still, Bose, like Apple, is a brand that breeds loyalty. For those customers who do choose to purchase the OE2i, they aren't likely to be disappointed, even if the OE2i can't quite keep up with the stars of the Denon and B&W lineups.

(AP) ? Apple is allowing the general public to get a look at a heartfelt and star-studded memorial service it held for employees to celebrate the life of Steve Jobs at its Cupertino headquarters last week.

Apple Inc. posted a link on its website late Sunday to a video of the service, which was held on Wednesday morning in an outdoor amphitheater in the center of the company's campus. The ceremony was intensely private. It was closed to the public and media handlers shooed reporters away from Apple's buildings at the time.

Apple Inc. has not held any public services for Jobs, the company's visionary co-founder who died at age 56 on Oct. 5 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

In a way, the video may serve that purpose. It runs 81 minutes and gives a rare glimpse of a company in mourning, showing several executives and board members reminiscing about their time with Jobs and speaking about the indelible mark he left on the technology world.

Jobs was a tech visionary who started Apple in his parents' Silicon Valley garage with friend Steve Wozniak in 1976. Both men left the company in 1985, Jobs after a clash with then-CEO John Sculley.

Jobs returned as interim CEO in 1997 after Apple, then in financial dire straits, purchased a computer company he created called Next. He led the company through a remarkable upswing that included the launch of such popular products as the iPhone, iPad and iPod.

He battled pancreatic cancer in 2004 and underwent a liver transplant in 2009 after taking a leave of absence for unspecified health problems. He took another leave of absence in January ? his third since his health problems began ? and resigned in August, handing the CEO job over to his hand-picked successor, Cook. His death came a day after Apple Inc. announced its latest iPhone, the 4S.

In the service honoring his life, CEO Tim Cook kicks things off, addressing an overflowing crowd of hundreds of Apple employees both on the ground and peering off balconies of surrounding buildings. Also in the audience was Jobs' wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, wearing a black shirt and dark sunglasses.

Apple closed all of its retail stores for the service so its many employees at those locations could view the memorial live via a webcast as well.

Banners flanking buildings surrounding the amphitheater show images of Jobs, including one with a famous shot of the then young tech executive cradling the first Macintosh computer.

In his remarks, Cook said the past two weeks had been the saddest of his life.

"But I know Steve. Steve would have wanted this cloud to lift for Apple and our focus to return to the work that he loved so much," he said.

Cook also divulged some of the last advice Jobs gave him, which he said was "to never ask what he would do, just do what's right."

Jobs saw how The Walt Disney Co. became "paralyzed" after founder Walt Disney's death, with so many people spending time thinking about what Disney would want. "And he did not want this to occur at Apple," Cook said.

Following Cook was former Apple executive and current board member Bill Campbell.

"He loved Apple so much, probably only a shade less than he loved his family," he said.

Former Vice President and current Apple board member Al Gore took the stage as well. And Apple's senior vice president of design, Jonathan Ive, who worked closely with Jobs on products such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad, spoke too.

Ive, who called Jobs his closest and most loyal friend, talked about Jobs' habit of bouncing ideas off him ? some of which were "really dopey," but others which "took the air from the room and left us both completely silent."

Ive remembered Jobs as an intense listener who revered the creative process.

"You see, I think he better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts so easily missed, so easily compromised, so easily just squished," he said.

He also related a tale of how Jobs' desire for excellence went far beyond designing Apple's products, saying that when the two of them would travel Ive would go up to his room leave his bags packed by the door, and sit on his bed.

"I would wait for the inevitable phone call, 'Hey Jony, this hotel sucks, let's go,'" he said.

The service also included performances by singer Norah Jones and the British band Coldplay.

The service followed a memorial at Stanford University on Oct. 16 for Jobs' friends and family. That service at Memorial Church reportedly brought out tech titans including Oracle chief Larry Ellison and Microsoft's Bill Gates, as well as politicians including Bill Clinton. U2 frontman Bono and Joan Baez reportedly performed.
