Taylor Swift will launch the next leg of her highly successful Speak Now Tour next month, and she's excited by all the possibilities the trek will bring this time around.

"We're going to Australia and New Zealand, because we are never done touring," she joked to MTV News during "MTV First: Taylor Swift," when she premiered her new video for the "Hunger Games" track "Safe & Sound."

"I'm really excited about going back to Australia and New Zealand because, well, New Zealand, it's the first time I've ever been there, and the Australian fans have been so good to me," she continued. "And this will be my third time going back there. I loved this show so much, the Speak Now Tour, that I didn't necessarily want to put it down. I hope they like it. I love going there. It's always really wonderful. The people are so nice."

The last time she hit the road, she was joined by a laundry list of A-listers, including T.I., Flo Rida, Usher and Paramore leading lady Hayley Williams, to name a few. And she still can't believe all those people agreed to perform with her.

"It's been crazy. Between all the guest artists that have come out and come onstage and surprised the audience, that was, I think, my favorite part of touring this year, because the audience never knew what they were going to get," she said. "And I loved that experience, and even walking around L.A., people come up to me, these girls will come up to me [like] 'I was at the Staples show where Justin Bieber came out' [or] 'I was at the one where Ellen and Nicki Minaj came out,' and it's just really fun, because you start to realize that concert meant something to them, and that's nice."

Not only did all those famous faces perform with Swift, but she also had one of the top-grossing tours of the year. "That's the fans doing that," she said. "I'm kind of blown away by that."

US military charges Pak national with terror link

The United States Defence Department announced Tuesday that ?the military commission has charged Majid Shoukat Khan, a Pakistani national, for joining hands with the Al Qaeda [ Images ] 'to commit murder and attempted murder' and providing material support for terrorism, and spying.

The department announced that Khan, who lived in the US from 1996 to early 2002 before returning to Pakistan, joined with members of Al Qaeda in Pakistan to plan and prepare attacks against diverse targets in the US, Indonesia, and elsewhere after September 11, 2001 attacks.

The commission, the DoD said, has alleged that Khan obtained travel document to travel from his residence in Baltimore, Maryland to Karachi in January of 2002, and that he conspired with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed regarding a plot to blow-up underground gasoline storage tanks at gas stations in the US and in other domestic plots.

It said that Khan at Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's direction, recorded a 'martyr video,' donned an explosive vest, and sat in a mosque waiting for then Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf [ Images ] to arrive so that Khan could assassinate him. That plot never succeeded because Musharraf never arrived.

According to the charges Khan travelled in March of 2002 from Karachi to Baltimore, where 'he performed tasks for Al Qaeda and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, including purchasing a laptop computer for Al Qaeda and contacting a military recruiter to obtain materials regarding the US military, which he intended to give to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.'

On returning to Pakistan in August 2002, Khan worked directly for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Ali Abdul al-Aziz Ali, and other Al Qaeda associates, all of whom were evading capture by United States and Pakistani authorities.

While in Bangkok, he allegedly delivered $50,000 in Al Qaeda funds to a southeast Asia-based Qaeda affiliate, which in turn delivered the money to the allied terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah, which used the funding to detonate a bomb in August of 2003 at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia, killing 11 people, wounding at least 81 others, and severely damaging the hotel.

According to a DoD press note, chief prosecutor Mark Martins has forwarded the sworn charges to convening authority Bruce MacDonald with a recommendation that the charges be referred to military commission for trial.?

By separate action, Martins also detailed Courtney Sullivan of the Justice Department as trial counsel in the case and Army Lt Col ?Michael Hosang and Navy Lt Nathaniel Gross as assistant trial counsel.

Martins has not recommended that any of the charges be referred to a military commission empowered to adjudge the death penalty, and therefore the maximum allowable penalty for the charged offenses is life imprisonment.

The convening authority will make an independent determination as to whether to refer some, all, or none of the charges to trial by military commission.

GPS Interferences Update: FCC Bars LightSquared From Using ...

Nothing surprising since this outcome was expected, Slashdot runs a story named?FCC Bars LightSquared From Using Airwaves.

Their summary: "A proposed wireless broadband network that would provide voice and Internet service using airwaves once reserved for satellite-telephone transmissions?should be shelved because it interferes with GPS technology,?the Federal Communications Commission?said Tuesday. The news appears to?squash the near-term hopes for the network?pushed by LightSquared, a Virginia company that is majority-owned by Philip Falcone, a New York hedge fund manager.?LightSquared, naturally, continues to?deny that the interference is real."

This seems to be the end of the LightSquared debacle which started over a year ago.

Ethical Consumerism is Hard ? The Business Ethics Blog

It?s not easy being an ethical consumer, these days ? especially if you?re hoping to buy products that embody all or most of the ethical values you care about.

Here?s an example. If you like salmon, and if you?re the sort of consumer who wants to eat ethically, should you buy organic salmon or buy wild salmon? After all, there?s a huge effort these days to promote organic foods as ethical ? gentler on the earth, and so on. Of course, others aren?t so sure that there?s much benefit to organic foods, and some even argue that the organic label is more a status symbol than anything else.

Now what about wild vs farmed? Some people think that farmed salmon is always bad. Others, like food-policy expert James McWilliams, argue that for whatever its current flaws, farmed fish provides our best hope for a future that includes significant amounts of protein at acceptable environmental costs. Eating wild fish, on the other hand, puts pressure on fragile wild populations.

But still, there are plenty of people who are dedicated to eating organic, and plenty of people who are quite insistant upon eating only wild fish.

The problem is, you can?t have it both ways. Wild salmon cannot, by definition, be organic, because it?s impossible to control what wild salmon eats. It can only be truly organic if it?s raised in captivity. Damned if you do, damned if you don?t.

This is just one tiny example of the challenges of ethical consumerism. Any given product can embody any number of incommensurable values ? values that can?t just be added up to arrive at a total ?ethics quotient.? The same problem applies to wind power (which produces no air pollution but kills birds) and oil from Canada?s oil sands. (which is produced in a democracy but is environmentally-dodgy).

Of course, none of that means that it?s not worth some effort to try to buy conscientiously. It just means that, as often as not, values-based consumerism is going to mean purchasing according to values that matter to you, rather than hoping to buy in a way that is ?truly ethical,? in some grander sense.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket HD vs. Nokia Lumia 900 ? AT&T Smartphone Battle to Intensify in Coming Days

Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket HD, which was unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show 2012 and is expected to be launched within few months, is a 9.27-millimeter sliver of a smartphone with an HD Super AMOLED screen (1280x720).

The HD iteration of Samsung's Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, however, will have to face fierce competition from Nokia's third Lumia smartphone - Lumia 900, which is expected to be launched during the same time.

The Nokia Lumia 900, launched at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Monday, is the first of Nokia's Windows Phone-based range to feature high-speed LTE connectivity. The phone has already received rave reviews about its head-turning design, bigger screen and a better battery than the Lumia 800. This time Nokia has packed a front-facing camera too (a feature missing in the previous model).

Like us on Facebook

Let's check out the features of Lumia 900 as compared to the Skyrocket HD to see which smartphone has the potential to create more fan-following.

Display: The Nokia Lumia 900 will sport a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive ClearBlack touch-screen with 252 ppi density, compared to the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket HD, which will have a 4.65-inch screen sporting an HD 1280 x 720 pixels Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touch-screen with 316 ppi pixel density and TouchWiz user interface. Both the smartphones have used the same Corning Gorilla Glass for screen protection.

Size: The Nokia Lumia 900 will have dimensions of 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm and will weigh 160g, while the size of the Skyrocket HD is still unknown. But its predecessor has dimensions of 129.8 x 68.8 x 9.5 mm and weighs 130.5 grams and according to various rumors, the HD version will be 9.3 mm thinner than the predecessor. Samsung, however, has not disclosed information about the size of the Skyrocket HD phone.

Processor and Memory: The Lumia 900 will come with a 1.4GHz Scorpion processor, an Adreno 205 GPU and will feature 16GB of internal storage and 512MB of RAM. The Lumia 900 comes with the latest Qualcomm APQ8055 Snapdragon chipset. Nokia has not provided the microSD card slot again with its new Lumia phone. Skyrocket HD, on the other hand, is expected to come with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. The Samsung Galaxy S2 phone will feature 16GB storage, 1 GB RAM and the memory of the phone can be expanded up to 32 GB via micro SD card slot.

Operating System: The Lumia will run on the latest Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5 Mango Operating Systems and offer one-touch access to social networking sites, along with features like easy grouping of contacts, communication threads and Internet Explorer 9. Samsung's latest phone will have Android OS, version 2.3.5 Gingerbread. But Samsung smartphone users can expect an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich later this year.

Camera: Nokia Lumia 900 will sport a rear-facing 8 megapixel 3264x2448 pixels unit autofocus and dual-LED flash camera. Unlike the Lumia 800, which does not have a secondary camera for video calling, the new Lumia will have a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for video calling. Nokia has used Carl Zeiss optics for its Lumia cameras.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket HD too will have an 8 MP, 3264x2448 pixels, autofocus, LED flash camera. But the 1080p video capture capabilities are more in the Samsung phone as compared to the 720p video capture capabilities of Nokia Lumia 900. Samsung has integrated a more powerful secondary camera of 2 MP for video calling than Nokia.

3G/4G: The Nokia Lumia 900 3G will come with HSPA+ support that will translate into download speeds of 21 Mbps and upload speeds of 5.76 Mbps. Unlike the Lumia 800, the newer phone will support 4G LTE connectivity for AT&T. The 4G network will allow speeds of up to 50Mbps for downlink and 25Mbps for uplink. The Samsung Skyrocket HD will have the same download speed of 21 Mbps and upload speed of 5.76 Mbps like Lumia 900 and will support 4G LTE connectivity for AT&T.

WLAN/Bluetooth/USB: The Lumia 900 will have Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, NFC, Bluetooth 2.1 version with A2DP and EDR and microUSB version 2.0 while the Skyrocket HD will have Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 3.0 with A2DP, EDR and microUSB version 2.0.

Battery: The Lumia 900 will have an improved and longer-lasting standard Li-Ion 1830 mAh (BP-6EW) battery, compared to the Li-Ion 1450 mAh battery of the Lumia 800. But Samsung is yet to reveal the battery information of Skyrocket HD.

Other Features: Lumia 900 will boast features like HTML5, Adobe Flash, A-GPS support, an Accelerometer, gyro, proximity and a compass, as well as active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic, MP3/WAV/eAAC+/WMA player, MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player, Xbox Live Hub, voice navigation and a document viewer/editor, predictive text input, video/photo editor, voice memo/command/dial.

Galaxy S2 Skyrocket HD will also have a range of features like NFS, active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, SNS integration, MP4/DivX/XviD/WMV/H.264/H.263 player, MP3/WAV/eAAC+/AC3/FLAC player, Organizer, image/video editor, document editor, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa integration, voice memo/dial/commands and predictive text input (Swype) to offer to its users.

The Galaxy S2 Skyrocket is sold at $200 with a new two-year contract by the AT&T and The HD version is expected to debut at $250 or more. It is rumored that the Nokia Lumia 900 can come at an amazingly cheap price of $99 from AT&T under a two-year contract.

Left-handed? Different bodies, different minds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 14, 2012) ? We like to think of ourselves as rational creatures, absorbing information, weighing it carefully, and making thoughtful decisions. But, as it turns out, we're kidding ourselves. Over the past few decades, scientists have shown there are many different internal and external factors influencing how we think, feel, communicate, and make decisions at any given moment.

One particularly powerful influence may be our own bodies, according to new research reviewed in the December issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Cognitive scientist Daniel Casasanto, of The New School for Social Research, has shown that quirks of our bodies affect our thinking in predictable ways, across many different areas of life, from language to mental imagery to emotion.

People come in all different shapes and sizes, and people with different kinds of bodies think differently -- an idea Casasanto has termed the 'body-specificity hypothesis.'

One way our bodies appear to shape our decision-making is through handedness. Casasanto and his colleagues explored whether being right-handed or left-handed might influence our judgments about abstract ideas like value, intelligence, and honesty.

Through a series of experiments, they found that, in general, people tend to prefer the things that they encounter on the same side as their dominant hand. When participants were asked which of two products to buy, which of two job applicants to hire, or which of two alien creatures looked more trustworthy, right-handers routinely chose the product, person, or creature they saw on the right side of the page, while left-handers preferred the one on the left. These kinds of preferences have been found in children as young as 5 years old.

But why should our handedness matter when it comes to making such abstract evaluations? It all comes down to fluency, according to Casasanto. "People like things better when they are easier to perceive and interact with," he says. Right-handers interact with their environment more easily on the right than on the left, so they come to associate 'good' with 'right' and 'bad' with 'left.'

This preference for things on our dominant side isn't set in stone. Right-handers who've had their right hands permanently handicapped start to associate 'good' with 'left.' The same goes for righties whose 'good' hand is temporarily handicapped in the laboratory, Casasanto and colleagues found. "After a few minutes of fumbling with their right hand, righties start to think like lefties," says Casasanto. "If you change people's bodies, you change their minds."

It's clear that this association has implications beyond the laboratory. The body-specificity hypothesis may even play a role in voting behavior -- Casasanto points out that many states still use butterfly ballots, with candidates' names listed on the left and right.

"Since about 90 percent of the population is right-handed," says Casasanto, "people who want to attract customers, sell products, or get votes should consider that the right side of a page or a computer screen might be the 'right' place to be."
