Being Overweight: How Parents Can Help Their Teen Children ...

From Science Daily?..

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 28% of adolescents are overweight. This means that about 1 in every 5 parents is thinking about how to discuss this with their child. Creating a healthful home environment, modeling healthful behaviors, and providing encouragement and support to adolescents for positive behavior changes may be more effective than communicating with adolescents about weight-related topics, according to a new study released in the November/December 2012 issue of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

According to the Institute of Medicine, Committee on Prevention of Obesity in Children and Youth, overweight and obese adolescents have an increased risk for physical comorbidities, including type 2 diabetes and negative psychosocial consequences stemming from the stigma associated with being overweight. With the rise in childhood obesity, development regarding interventions specifically for parents of overweight adolescents could be part of the solution.

Considering the challenges associated with parenting adolescents in general, and to identify potential targets for interventions, it is important to recognize issues faced specifically by parents of overweight adolescents. Investigators from the University of Minnesota posed two questions: (1) what issues do parents of overweight adolescents face? and (2) what advice do parents of overweight adolescents have for other parents? Twenty-seven adolescents and their parents were surveyed to determine factors contributing to successful weight loss among adolescents.

The investigators found that the issues raised by parents included difficulties encountered in effectively communicating with their adolescent about weight-related topics, perceived inability to control the adolescent?s decisions about eating and physical activity, concern for the adolescent?s physical and mental well-being, and feelings of personal responsibility for the adolescent?s weight issues. Parental advice for helping overweight adolescents included having a healthful home environment, modeling healthful behaviors, and providing encouragement and support to adolescents for positive behavior changes.

Gargling sugar water boosts self-control, study finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? To boost self-control, gargle sugar water. According to a study co-authored by University of Georgia professor of psychology Leonard Martin published Oct. 22 in Psychological Science, a mouth rinse with glucose improves self-control.

His study looked at 51 students who performed two tasks to test self-control. The first task, which has shown to deplete self-control, was the meticulous crossing out of Es on a page from a statistics book. Then, participants performed what is known as the Stroop task where they were asked to identify the color of various words flashed on a screen, which spell out the names of other colors. The Stroop task's goal is to turn off the student's tendency to read the words and instead see the colors.

Half of the students rinsed their mouths with lemonade sweetened with sugar while performing the Stroop test, the other half with Splenda-sweetened lemonade. Students who rinsed with sugar, rather than artificial sweetener, were significantly faster at responding to the color rather than the word.

"Researchers used to think you had to drink the glucose and get it into your body to give you the energy to (have) self control," Martin said. "After this trial, it seems that glucose stimulates the simple carbohydrate sensors on the tongue. This, in turn, signals the motivational centers of the brain where our self-related goals are represented. These signals tell your body to pay attention."

It took subjects about 3-5 minutes to perform the Stroop test. Martin said results show a measure of self-control, but a glucose mouthwash might not be enough to solve some of the biggest self-control obstacles like losing weight or smoking.

"The research is not clear yet on the effects of swishing with glucose on long-term self-control," he said. "So, if you are trying to quit smoking, a swish of lemonade may not be the total cure, but it certainly could help you in the short run."

Martin, in collaboration with co-author Matthew Sanders, a doctoral candidate also in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, believes the motivation comes in the form of self-values, or emotive investment.

"It is the self-investment," Martin said. "It doesn't just crank up your energy, but it cranks up your personal investment in what you are doing. Clicking into the things that are important to you makes those self-related goals salient."

They theorized that the glucose causes emotive enhancement, leading the person to pay attention to their goals and perform better at evoking the non-dominant response.

"The glucose seems to be good at getting you to stop an automatic response such as reading the words in the Stroop task and to substitute the second harder one in its place such as saying the color the word is printed in," he said. "It can enhance emotive investment and self-relevant goals."

Previous self-control studies showed a marked decrease in performance for the second task.

"Previous studies suggest the first task requires so much energy, you just don't have the energy left for the second task that you need," Martin said. "We are saying when people engage in self-control, they ignore important aspects of their goals and feelings. If you have to stay late at work, for example, but you really want to be going home, you have to ignore your desire to go home. Doing so will help you stay late at work, but it may also put you out of touch with what you personally want and feel on later tasks. Swishing glucose can focus you back on those goals and feelings and this, in turn, can help you perform better on the second task. In short, we believe self-control goes away because people send away, not because they don't have energy. People turn it off on purpose."

Martin's research focused on what the affects of swishing glucose psychologically rather than physiologically. "We think it makes your self-related goals come to mind," he said.

Martin's lab is continuing to study how subjects evoke and interpret emotive responses.

Corsair Announces New Flagship Hydro Series Liquid CPU Coolers ...

Corsair, the leading supplier of high-performance liquid CPU coolers for PC enthusiasts, today announced the Hydro Series H100i and H80i liquid CPU coolers, a ground-up re-design of the world?s most popular, proven, and award-winning liquid CPU coolers, the H100 and H80. The new H100i and H80i models have been enhanced to deliver improved cooling, quieter operation, simpler installation, and Corsair Link digital control.

Better Cooling, Lower Noise
To improve cooling performance over previous generations, the Hydro Series H100i and H80i coolers use new, more efficient copper cold plates, improved manifolds, optimized fan designs, and larger diameter tubing for increased coolant flow. Corsair?s new flagship liquid CPU cooler, the Hydro Series H100i, utilizes a 240mm radiator for increased surface area and cooling capacity. The Hydro Series H80i uses a double-thick 120mm radiator and two fans in a ?push-pull? arrangement and is compatible with most enthusiast cases with a 120mm rear exhaust fan.

Both the H100i and H80i use new SP120L High Performance fans based on Corsair?s static pressure optimized Air Series SP120 fans. The SP120L utilizes wide-body, low-pitch fan blades designed for outstanding static pressure at a lower noise level, and a motor that has been specially tuned for high torque, ensuring consistently high performance when used in high resistance environments such as on a liquid cooling radiator. With the new SP120L fans, noise levels have been reduced significantly.

Photo Gallery

?Class-leading performance, and reliable, quiet CPU cooling have made the Hydro Series the most popular and award-winning liquid CPU coolers in the world,? said Thi La, Senior VP & GM of Memory and Enthusiast Component Products at Corsair. ?The new H100i and H80i coolers demonstrate Corsair?s commitment to providing our customers with the latest and best technology, including unparalleled configuration and monitoring, while improving ease-of-use and compatibility.?

Video: Could race be a determining factor in the election?

>>> welcome back. in addition to voter turnout , our first read team says the race of those voters, the ethnic background could be the true determining factor on who wins the white house . take a look at the two scenarios. first, if white voters make up 74% of the vote, if this happens and both sides maximize their margins, meaning governor romney wins by 20 points and the president wins minorities by 60%, the president would walkway with the popular vote by a fraction of the point. the same is tree for governor romney if whites are 75% of the electorate. in other words, the lynchpin in this race could be turnout among white voters. let me bring in the president of latino vote. we hope to get on john raulson out of nevada . this is interesting for many reasons, and i wanted to talk specific alally about nevada where the foreclosures are high and unemployment rate is high. latinos in that state could help president obama win it in a significant way. let's see what we see in regarding the white vote and in a key state like nevada the latino vote being the difference.

>> if everybody recalls the election of 2010 , when reid was running against sharon inkeningle, all the polls showed engel was ahead by significant margins. what happened was at the end of the day when you looked at the scorecard, latinos went in favor to harry reid 9-10. that was because sharon engel's campaign was so egregious when it came to the latino votes. pollsters feel that la tyne notices won't turn out, and a lot of working class latinos are cell phones. this is the dreary part of polling. you often miss a big swath of potential when it comes to voting to the new voter, which is not only latinos but women and youth. what we're going to see is the not only is nevada up in place, it's a safe bet it's part of the obama camp, but because we have to modernize our polling system the same think in ohio , virginia and florida where you have big numbers of la tonos numbers were there in 2010 and pollsters are missing as well.

>> mccain, bush hispanic vote, john mccain 31% of the latino vote and 2004 george w. bush took 40%. mitt romney in the latest polling 24%. it is not just about immigration we see this regression, if these numbers are correct.

>> it's not just about immigration. mitt romney walked into the selection with the latino vote up for grabs. had he made a case for the economy and education and small business talking directly to the latino voter, he would be ahead among the latino vote. in order tamron , you need at least 40% of the latino vote to make it to the white house , and he doesn't have a formula for that. if you look closely at what's happening in ohio , you have 150,000 voters there that are hispanic and you have virginia where mccain is leading there for the governor and has a sophisticated ground operation that helps obama and you have florida. you have over 100,000 registered democrats, more than republicans among the latino vote.

>> let me play what presidential historian michael beshlav that was on this weekend. he talked about this divide and the electorate. let me play it.

>> this country is so divided between the two candidates, not necessarily only by ideas but by gender, economic groups, ethnicity in some cases. i think that is something that the founders would have been horrified by.

>> we wanted michael on. he wasn't available. it's interesting that the founders are all white males and mostly very wealthy would have been horrified by what we are seeing, which is this divide where you have latinos , african- americans , unmarried women in this one group and young people , and then on the other side of the equation you have a candidate hoping and his people hoping that whites will make up 75% of the electorate so he can win.

>> i think he's leaning towards we're americans first, somehow you create sil lows of americans and that's the most dangerous for our democracy. we see an increasingly generational divide. in ohio close to 23% of 18 to 39-year-olds are latinos . only 15% are 18 to 39. across the country you start to see increasingly demographic changes where there's younger populations of ethnic latinos and african- americans versus older americans . at the end of the day ilts a maerlt of making sure that every vote counts and people stay in line and participate.

>> let me bring in john, the man who knows more about nevada politics than anyone else. six electoral vote . in nevada hispanics account for 27% of the population. so many people have remarked about your unemployment rate there, the foreclosure rate. we were in nevada doing some stories a couple of years ago. every other building it seemed had been abandoned by construction workers there, but even still you're seeing that state, because of the latino vote, really going the way of president obama in the early polling. what are the lessons moving ahead if there are any from your state alone if the numbers are true?

>> i think you laid it out pretty well, tamron . i think we're a microcosm of the nation in that sense. the hispanic vote is 15% of the electorate the last two-cycles. it's likely to be the same. some of the polling has shown president obama up in the hispanic vote by even more than he was in 2008 when exit polls showed he won it by 50 points. if he wasn't anywhere in that neighborhood, 15% of the electorate, you have a difficult time if you're a republican. that goes for the senate race here, too, tamron , now in play. shelley berkeley is a dead heat with dean hall ron. a lot has to do with the hispanic vote.

>> john, we greatly appreciate you coming on. hopefully we have you get some reaction with us after it all goes down tomorrow. thank you, john. we'll see what happens in nevada and the lessons to

The Shoebox Inn House Tour | Apartment Therapy

shoeboxinn-tour-1.jpg

Name: Carol and Jeff Sayre
Location: Seaview, Washington
Size: 500 Square Ft
Years lived in: 12 years ? own

The Sayre family bought their vacation home in Seaview, Washington twelve years ago. This one bedroom cottage is blocks from the waterfront in a sleepy coastal town just 3 hours south of Seattle. Now spending most of their time up north in the city, the Sayres have opened their home to guests and family friends who need a quiet getaway. Welcome to the Shoebox Inn.

shoeboxinn-housetour-thumbs.jpg

When my friend Mike emailed me about his family vacation home, I realized what an opportunity it would be to show how compact living can be comfortable and functional, even when sleeping up to 6 people. Carol expressed her desire to stay thrifty, cozy and welcoming in the design of The Shoebox Inn. She feels that when designing a home it is most important to have "things around that you love but that also function efficiently. Make sure there are comfortable places to read with adequate lighting. That's what makes me feel most at home in a dwelling."

This cozy small town was like the set of movie; everyone seems to know each other in town, everything is locally grown and supported? and there is no need for glitzy state-of-the-art anything. Most specifically, Carol says the 1957 Zenith Range holds high significance in the home. "I'm sure it was the height of modern luxury and convenience when it was first made. It reigns like the "homecoming queen" in the kitchen, setting just the right mood."

With a home in Seattle and their two sons in Los Angeles, there were many influences and ideas that came together throughout the years in this vacation home. "Both of our sons live in Los Angeles. One works in the film industry and the other in design. I think there is a little bit of a Hollywood set "feel" about "The Shoebox Inn." Because of the great movie tradition of Los Angeles, there probably are few homes that aren't influenced in some way by the culture of Los Angeles, either directly or indirectly."

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Vintage Thrift Store Chic.

Inspiration: My Grandma Betty, a woman who had both an aesthetic eye and a good sense of practicality.

Favorite Element: The nod to the 50's feel of the kitchen.

Biggest Challenge: Sleeping the whole family in such a small space. There was only one bedroom, so we had to think like we were on a ship. We managed to get two sets of bunks and a full size bed in the room by taking out the only closet and filling in the doorway from the bedroom to the kitchen. We replaced the lost closet space with storage baskets under the bunks. The new wall also gave us a place to put a dining room table in the kitchen.

What Friends Say: We all like to get away and one of my favorite things about owning the house is letting our friends stay. It feels good when they express appreciation for the look of the house, but we love hearing about the fun things they did in the area even more. This corner of the Northwest Washington Coast has really managed to stay unspoiled ? no outlet malls, casinos or massive resorts blot the landscape. Thus the Long Beach Peninsula has the feeling of yesteryear about it. I think our friends appreciate that as much as anything.

Biggest Embarrassment: Booking two friends to stay at "The Shoebox Inn" for the same weekend.

Proudest DIY: Making built-ins so that a 500 square foot house could work for a family of six. I also like the black and white diamond painted porch. My friend Cynthia helped paint it. It was a bit time consuming, but it greatly helped the street appeal of the cottage.

Biggest Indulgence: We have a few prints, but try to buy original art as much as possible. We've made a game of collecting art for the beach house by putting ourselves on a thrift store budget. The cottage is cute and cozy, but because nothing is overly valuable, we don't worry about what might happen to the stuff when others stay. With the exception of one picture, we spent no more than $35 on any one piece of artwork in the cottage. Sometimes I'll get a painting at a second hand store and frame it with some great frame from a garage sale to improve the look. A good frame can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Best Advice: When decorating a vacation house, put your guests above your possessions. Be willing to share your home. It only increases your joy of ownership.

Dream Sources: My primary home, which has a different feel than the beach house, has an old world European feel ? perhaps even monastic in places. I love the inspiration of many French and English magazines, especially old ones from the 90's, but I try to incorporate the looks in a uniquely American way.

Resources of Note:

* Carol noted that everything in the home was either brought over from their home in Seattle or purchased at thrift and vintage shops. She never spent more than $35 on any of the artwork in the home.

Thanks, Carol and Jeff!
