Trust

If you think back to your Psychology 101 class and the developmental stages proposed by Erik Erikson, you recall that in the first year of life, it is essential for children to have the opportunity to form trusting bonds with their primary caregivers. From the earliest years of life, trust is the foundation of all healthy attachments and its primacy continues into adult relationships.
Trust between spouses means honesty. Trust means doing what you say you will do. Turst means not making promises that you can?t keep. Trust is being there through thick and thin. Trust is loving someone even when they are acting unlovable. ?Trust is knowing that your spouse will love you not just in spite of your flaws, but because of them.

Honesty

Honesty breeds trust. Honesty has everything to do with telling the truth so that your spouse can count on what you say, but it also has much to do with trusting your spouse to be able to handle your words as you express them directly. A sure sign of stress in a relationship is when spouses walk on eggshells around each other, afraid to say what they really think or express in words how they honestly feel. When partners passively allow their spouse?s needs to override theirs, or aggressively bulldoze through conversations in order to get their own needs met first, they damage their relationships. Passive aggressive communication?where individuals express anger in covertly hostile ways?can be even more damaging to relationships; when couples fail to communicate honestly and directly with one another, they lose trust and cause long-term relationship damage.

Listening

Feeling heard and understood is a universal need. Within healthy relationships, it is a must-have. Good listening is about giving someone else the floor and truly putting your own thoughts, opinions, judgments, and automatic responses aside while you genuinely tune in to what he is expressing. Good listening involves your body?good eye contact, standing close?and your mind. Really listening to a partner has as much to do with picking up on what is not being said as it does hearing spoken words. Good listening is a gift that makes a person feel valued and worthwhile. Good listening is a challenge, because in our daily, hectic, over-booked lives, we often barely have the time to listen to the thoughts in our own heads, much less time to hear what is going on in someone else?s lives. Yet listening is the way human beings connect and is an essential foundation for a healthy relationship with a spouse.

Americans, publishing industry executives say, have never cared much about books from other cultures. That's why only about 3 percent of the books published in the United States each year are books in translation.

But it's hard to resist the drive of globalization in any sector these days and that includes books. "We're all becoming more aware of being global citizens," says Terry Hong, the BookDragon blogger for the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program. And that awareness may be forcing Americans to be less parochial in their reading habits.

Some say it has already happened. The wild success of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" by Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson has US book agents poring over even the most obscure Scandinavian detective writers to find the next big book.

Within the past eight years, virtually everything written by the late Chilean novelist/poet/essayist Roberto Bola?o seems to be coveted by American readers. And young African writers like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Helon Habila may not yet be household names, but you could walk into most mainstream independent bookstores in the US and find their books on the shelf.

Yet it's still a difficult journey for young literary voices from foreign shores to make their way to the US, still the world's largest book market. In the past 20 years, English and Irish universities have been nourishing more US-style writers' programs. (The best known, the 40-year-old master's degree in creative writing at the University of East Anglia, is modeled directly on the Iowa Writers' Workshop.)

But for the most part, says Gerry Feehily, author and arts critic on French national radio station France Culture, you "don't hear much about young [European] authors emerging out of a workshop or creative writing class." In fact, he says, "in France a writers' workshop would be considered 'Anglo-Saxon' ? something shameful and commercially oriented."

The best way for European writers to reach a global audience, he says, is to win one of the growing number of big-ticket English-language literary prizes, such as the Man Booker, the Orange, or the Costa Prize.

It's the same for young African talents, says Geoff Wisner, author of "A Basket of Leaves: 99 Books that Capture the Spirit of Africa."

Engaging an American audience is anything but easy. Winning one of Africa's two biggest literary prizes ? the Caine or the Wole Soyinka ? is the best bet but even that is no guarantee.

Mr. Wisner notes that Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina won the Caine Prize in 2002, founded the influential literary magazine Kwani?, and teaches at Bard College in the US. Yet he is still best known (if known at all) to American readers as the author of "How to Write about Africa" ? a short satirical piece mocking Anglo writers who set novels in Africa.

In Latin America, Brazil does have a tradition of writers' workshops. But what many of today's writers are most excited about, says Jose Luiz Goldfarb, curator of that country's prestigious Pr?mio Jabuti literary award, is the opportunity to make their voices heard through blogs and social media.

"This is doubtlessly going to generate ... a new path for authors to come out," he says.

Ultimately some argue that Americans ? a nation of immigrants quick to embrace a rich mix of immigrant writers like Jhumpa Lahiri, Junot D?az, Edwidge Danticat, and Ha Jin ? don't necessarily need to import literature in translation to enjoy a chorus of international voices.

In fact, says Ms. Hong, many American readers need look no farther than Iowa.

"In many ways, [The Writers' Workshop] is already a microcosm of world literature," she says.

President Barack Obama spoke to the American people Thursday evening, a short speech that was covered by the major networks, announcing a drawdown plan to withdraw 10,000 troops from Afghanistan by the end of the year and all 33,000 "surge" troops by September 2012. The move will see American troop levels fall to 70,000, still a far cry from ending American involvement in Afghanistan, which was one of Senator Barack Obama's campaign promises. Four years later, is the President simply shuffling chess pieces in a political game in order to win the next election?

Cynical though it may seem, the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan to "pre-surge" strength does not signify any great shift in American involvement in the war-torn country and only seems to be a political ploy to keep the President's electoral base, many of whom voted for him partially due to his promises on removing troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, mollified. The drawdown simply returns troop strength to the levels that existed prior to President Obama's West Point announcement of sending in more troops in 2009.

Post-September 2012? The President said that American troop reductions will continue at a "steady pace" until 2014, when Afghan security forces can take over "the lead" in their own military affairs.

It cannot help but be noticed that the last of the "surge" troops will be leaving Afghanistan just over a month prior to the national election in November.

But what has a decade in the "Graveyard of Empires" done for the United States. According to CNN's Anderson Cooper, not a lot.

Cooper detailed after Obama's speech the sad conditions of the American situation in Afghanistan, even though billions of American taxpayer dollars have been spent in military, economic, and humanitarian aid. The war costs $2 billion per month to maintain, while another $300 million is spent in economic aid per month. At the same time, Cooper exhibited a map of provincial control of Afghanistan, which clearly indicated that the American military, its coalition allies, and its Afghan allies only control three small provinces around Kabul, the Afghan capital. The Taliban, which the United States and coalition forces routed in 2001, have slowly retaken and reestablished control in many Afghan provinces, mostly in the western part of the country. They also maintain a presence in most provinces throughout the country.

But Americans are tired of the foreign war. A recent Pew Research Poll noted that the trend in polls for the past couple years has resulted in 56 percent of Americans calling for American troops to be brought home as soon as possible. Only 39 percent believe they should stay until the country is stabilized, which has become a relative term associated with politics, agendas, and whoever is talking at the moment. But the most dramatic shift in public sentiment came after the death of Osama bin Laden.

Succinctly, many Americans feel that the U. S. mission in Afghanistan -- the capture or death of Osama bin Laden and the limiting of al Qaeda's base of operations -- is over. The exorbitant cost of the war, coupled with its sister conflict in Iraq, has become a tremendous drain on the American economy.

That the U. S. and coalition forces are also seen as occupiers has made the situation, from nearly every perspective, basically untenable.

But grumbling from the Left and the impending national election may have caused President Obama to move toward at least appearing to begin a withdrawal, revealing that he at least has a plan for getting American troops out of a military and diplomatic situation that seems altogether rather hopeless. With liberals and supporters noting that several high-profile promises have not been kept (Guantanamo is still open; "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is still in effect), a mollification of his base of support might have been seen as imperative. Not that liberals would be tempted to vote for a conservative (although they might), there is the chance that they may decline to vote at all, thus removing their support. In a close election, which 2012 portends to be, every vote lost could potentially be costly.

President Obama and his advisers know all of this. That the speech announcing the withdrawals came before any major campaigning has been done by the President's potential 2012 GOP rivals almost certainly removes the Afghan war as a significant campaign weapon.

Still, the human cost of the war has been tragic and a withdrawal will be seen by many as long overdue. To date, over 1,600 Americans have been killed -- with nearly another 1,000 coalition forces -- in Afghanistan.

The withdrawal begins in July.

New York ? The list of comparisons goes on, as politicos struggle to classify the moderate Republican presidential hopeful who worked for Obama

Jon Huntsman's bid for the Republican presidential nomination is a hot topic among reporters and commentators, in part because it's so unusual. Huntsman is a moderate, civil-sounding Republican in uncivil, polarized times. Moreover, he would be running for president against his former boss, Barack Obama, who?made the former Utah governor his ambassador to China. And yet, despite the uniqueness of Huntsman's run, the chattering class cannot resist equating Huntsman with a number of other politicians. Here's a rundown of supposed Huntsman precedents:

1. John McCain
Huntsman wants you to think he's a motorcycle-riding road demon, says Michelle Malkin at?National Review. But "underneath the Steve McQueen costumery, this made-for-cable-TV Moderate Speed Racer is a creaky old John McCain on Wheels." Like McCain 1.0, "McHuntsman" is a pro-cap-and-trade, amnesty-loving, entitlement-expanding, "big-spending accommodationist" whose main constituency is "swooning reporters" and "the Democratic elite." So far, his "media paramours" outnumber actual Republicans at his events.

2. Gen. Wesley Clark
The most "obvious parallel" is Clark, the former NATO allied commander who "pole-vaulted into the 2004 Democratic race based on elite dissatisfaction with the other contenders," says Walter Shapiro at?The New Republic. Both of them look good on paper ? Clark a decorated general, Huntsman "the only Republican in the race with serious foreign-policy experience" ? but the comparison shouldn't cheer Obama's former China ambassador: Clark, after all, "never found a way to offer voters more than his star-spangled resume."

3. Ronald Reagan
The comparison Huntsman is clearly hoping to elicit is with the Gipper, says Paul Bentley at the Daily Mail. He was a staffer in the Reagan White House, has a picture of himself and the former president on his Facebook page, and "made his announcement at Liberty State Park in New Jersey, the same historic location used by Reagan to launch his 1980 bid."

4. John F. Kennedy
Huntsman is "at pains to follow in Ronald Reagan's footsteps," but he seems more like one of the American Left's icons, says Darrell Delamaide at?MarketWatch. Let's see: "Glamourous wife," the "easy self-confidence ? insouciance, even ? that comes with inherited wealth and privilege," and a great head of hair... The only thing keeping Hunstman from being the "Republican version of John F. Kennedy" is "the humor and the vigor" that made JFK ? and Reagan, for that matter ? such popular candidates.

5. Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.
There's really only one politician who truly matches Huntsman's trajectory, says Steve Kornacki at?Salon. Lodge, another moderate Republican, was JFK's ambassador to South Vietnam, but then launched "a write-in campaign that produced a surprise victory in the '64 New Hampshire primary" for the Republican nomination. Of course, Lodge's "sort-of campaign fizzled" pretty quickly. In 2012, the "taint of Obama-ism" will probably end Huntsman's campaign just as fast ? or faster.
