A one million dollar endowment has been given to the College of Arts, Sciences and Engineering by UR Alumnus and Trustee Bernard T. Ferrari and his wife Linda Gaddis Ferrari for a yearly humanities symposium and related curricula.
?The symposia allows us to expand on the research and teaching that UR faculty do, enabling us to bring to campus experts in fields of interest to the broader community,? Dean for Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies Thomas Dipiero said.
Set to feature public talks from visiting scholars with a focus on the 14th to 17th century humanistic thought, the symposium hopes to bring a greater appreciation to the beauty of art, literature and history. The symposia will take place annually and will consist of several events, with the next one set to take place in the spring semester of 2013. Talks of having them span throughout a semester and possibly the entire academic year are also on the table.
The symposium will also offer half- or full-semester long courses designed to bring a ?wide variety of humanistic inquiry to a broad cross-section of the undergraduate population? Dean Dipiero said.
This semester, nine faculty members are participating in ?The Art and Science of Time,? a series of classes in conjunction with the inaugural visit of Anthony Grafton, the Henry Putnam Professor of History at Princeton University, who gave the keynote lecture entitled ?Maps of Time: Science, Scholarship, and History in Early Modern Europe? in the Carlson-Hawkins Room in Rush Rhees Library on March 21.
?He lent us his experience as the past president of the American Historical Association, and he shared his thoughts on the future of graduate education in the humanities,? Dipiero said.
?[The symposium] is a catalyst to the work we do and shows significant progress in in humanistic studies,? History Professor Richard Kaeuper said. ?Having world-renowned scholars will boost interest as well as give recognition to how important the humanities are to students and the university. To students this is a validation of their studies.?
?It?s one of the banes of being a humanities major that I have sort of accepted,? said senior and American History and literature double major Nicole St. James said. ?UR is well-known for its top-notch science programs and often times the humanities seem underrepresented.?
?People gloss over them because they aren?t as research based,? Olufemi Watson, a health and medical communications interdepartmental major, said. ?Nine times out of ten no one is giving donations to them. This was the perfect avenue to generate new enthusiasm for the humanities both within the student body and the faulty.?
Ferrari is a Rochester native and graduate from the College of Arts and Sciences in 1970 with a bachelor?s degree in science cum laude, and a graduate from the School of Medicine and Dentistry with a medical degree in 1974. He serves the University as a trustee and a member of the Meliora Challenge Campaign Cabinet. Ferrari and his wife are also Charter Members of the George Eastman Circle.
?The study of the humanities provides people with the ability to appreciate beauty and better appreciate life,? Farrari, who first took interest in the arts when he took a course in Medieval and Renaissance era architecture and art, said. ?The arts have relevance to solving today?s problems when that knowledge is brought together with science and other disciplines.?
He added that art helped to keep him grounded through his rigorous studies in science and medicine.

An ionic motor for small satellites
The first prototype of a new, ultra-compact motor that will allow small satellites to journey beyond Earth's orbit is just making its way out of the EPFL laboratories where it was built. The goal of the micro motor: to drastically reduce the cost of space exploration.
Imagine reaching the Moon using just a tenth of a liter of fuel. With their ionic motor, MicroThrust, EPFL scientists and their European partners are making this a reality and ushering in a new era of low-cost space exploration. The complete thruster weighs just a few hundred grams and is specifically designed to propel small (1-100 kg) satellites, which it enables to change orbit around the Earth and even voyage to more distant destinations functions typically possible only for large, expensive spacecraft. The just-released prototype is expected to employed on CleanSpace One, a satellite under development at EPFL that is designed to clean up space debris, and on OLFAR, a swarm of Dutch nanosatellites that will record ultra-low radio-frequency signals on the far side of the Moon.
The motor, designed to be mounted on satellites as small as 10x10x10 cm3, is extremely compact but highly efficient. The prototype weighs only about 200 grams, including the fuel and control electronics.
"At the moment, nanosatellites are stuck in their orbits. Our goal is to set them free," explains Herbert Shea, coordinator of the European MicroThrust project and director of EPFL's Microsystems for Space Technologies Laboratory.
Small satellites are all the rage right now because their manufacturing and launch costs are relatively low about half a million dollars, compared to conventional satellites that run into the hundreds of millions. But nanosatellites currently lack an efficient propulsion system that would render them truly autonomous and thus able to carry out exploration or observation missions.
A motor that doesn't burn fuel
Instead of a combustible fuel, the new mini motor runs on an "ionic" liquid, in this case the chemical compound EMI-BF4, which is used as a solvent and an electrolyte. It is composed of electrically charged molecules (like ordinary table salt) called ions, except that this compound is liquid at room temperature. The ions are extracted from the liquid and then ejected by means of an electric field to generate thrust. This is the principle behind the ionic motor: fuel is not burned, it is expelled.
In the motor developed at EPFL, the flow of ions is emitted from an array of tiny silicon nozzles over 1,000 per square centimeter. The fuel is first guided by capillary action from a reservoir to the extremity of the micro-nozzles, where the ions are then extracted by an electrode held at 1,000 volts, accelerated, and finally emitted out the back of the satellite. The polarity of the electric field is reversed every second, so that all the ions positive and negative are ejected.
SystematIC Design, a MicroThrust project partner, designed the motor's electrical system. The ion ejection system requires a high electrical voltage, but the available energy aboard a 1-liter nanosatellite is limited to a few small solar cells in practice, about four watts of power. The Dutch company was able to develop a system that overcame this difficulty.
Cruising speed: 40,000 km per hour
After six months of acceleration, the microsatellite's speed increases from 24,000 km/h, its launch speed, to 42,000 km/h. The acceleration is only about a tenth of a millimeter per square second, which translates into 0-100 km/h in 77 hours. But in space, where there is no friction to impede motion, gentle but steady acceleration is the way to go.
"We calculated that in order to reach lunar orbit, a 1-kg nanosatellite with our motor would travel for about six months and consume 100 milliliters of fuel," explains Muriel Richard, a scientist in EPFL's Swiss Space Center.
The ionic motor will power CleanSpace One a nanosatellite whose mission is to tidy up space by grabbing space debris and pulling it into the Earth's atmosphere to be safely incinerated. According to the Swiss Space Center, CleanSpace One will take two to three months and more than 1,000 terrestrial revolutions to reach one of its targets, the decommissioned Swisscube cubesat or Tlsat-1 cubesat. And the scientists have just over a year to finalize their system.
"Our prototype still has a few flow problems at the nozzle extremities, which could cause short-circuits," explains Shea. The prototype was developed in the context of a European project coordinated by EPFL and involved Queen Mary and Westfield College in the UK, the Dutch companies TNO and SystematIC Design B.V., and Nanospace AB in Sweden.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Despite severely trimming his lagging campaign to cut costs, Newt Gingrich vowed Wednesday to stay in the Republican presidential race until front-runner Mitt Romney has the necessary support to become the nominee.
Until Romney has won the 1,144 convention delegates it takes to win the nomination, Gingrich said "I owe it to the people that helped me for the last year to represent their views and their values."
He bristled at the pressure building on him and Rick Santorum to drop out and make way for Romney.
"For some reason everybody in the establishment is chanting that Santorum and I should quit," Gingrich told Washington, D.C., radio station WTOP. "Romney has to earn this. It's not going to be given to him."
But Gingrich still intends to support Romney if he gets the required number of delegates before the party's national convention in Tampa, Fla., in August, said Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond.
One-third of Gingrich's campaign staff has been laid off and campaign manager Michael Krull was asked to resign, Hammond said Tuesday night. Hammond and communications director Joe DeSantis will stay on.
The new strategy calls for the former House speaker to spend less time in primary states and more time trying to persuade delegates to back him at the Republican National Convention. The campaign's focus also is expected to begin emphasizing digital outreach, in particular YouTube, Twitter and other social media.
This latest reshaping of Gingrich's campaign came after he reported more than $1.5 million in outstanding debt by the end of February, according to Federal Election Commission filings, including legal fees and advertising production costs. At the same time, he had about $1.5 million cash on hand, the least of the four GOP candidates.
"Cash flow was shorter than we'd like it to be, so we're doing the appropriate things to be able to campaign," he said Wednesday.
Santorum, who is challenging Gingrich for the anti-Romney vote among conservatives, responded to the news by urging Republicans to back his effort, not Romney's.
"I think it is time for all the Republican candidates to coalesce behind me," Santorum said Tuesday in Delavan Lake, Wis. "You know, let's just have a conservative nominee to take on Barack Obama. Until that time happens, I'm not going to call on anyone to get out."
Hobbled by weak fundraising and well behind Romney in the hunt for delegates, Gingrich has been under growing pressure to help unify Republicans by dropping out of the race.
In a nod to those who think he should give way to Romney, Gingrich pledged Tuesday to support Romney if the former Massachusetts governor wins the needed number of delegates by the end of the GOP primary season in June.
"Obviously I will support him and will be delighted to do anything I can to help defeat Barack Obama," Gingrich told reporters as he campaigned in Annapolis, Md. Republicans vote in Maryland's primary next week.
If Romney falls short, Gingrich said, "I think you'll then have one of the most interesting, open conventions in American history."
Gingrich tried to position himself as an anti-establishment figure in the race while playing up the 20 years he spent in the House, including several years as speaker. He has struggled since his campaign peaked just before the Iowa caucuses in January. Devastating attacks from Romney and a Romney-aligned super PAC have helped deny him further victories. He has won just two primaries, in South Carolina and Georgia, and has less than 15 percent of the delegates so far.
Gingrich had hoped for a Southern-based comeback, but Santorum won contests in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.
Romney is the leader with 568 delegates, based on a tally by The Associated Press. That is slightly less than half the needed 1,144, and more than four times as many delegates as Gingrich, who has 135.

We would all probably choose to pay for our car with cash but for most people that just isn?t an option. Sometimes we need to get car finance to buy our car and there a number of car finance packages available. These include deals from the showroom where we buy the car, a loan from the high street bank, a special car loan from a specialised company and so on. Whatever the car credit you choose always make sure you do your research first to make sure that you get the best possible rate.
Car insurance might not cover all costs
So lets imagine you have brought a new car from a car dealership with a car loan. You have had your car for around a year when you are involved in an accident and your car is written off. The accident was your fault, so you may be surprised to find that the car insurance you have is not enough to cover the whole cost of the car finance. A lot of people mistakenly assume that their comprehensive insurance package will cover the entire cost of the car, but it?doesn't?include the cost of the finance. This is a very tricky situation and would leave you in a difficult position. Not only have you had your car written off, the insurance company won?t pay for what you owe on the car finance. If you?aren't?able to make up the shortfall then you could be sued by the car credit company and this will seriously damage your credit score.
Gap insurance or PPI
There are ways though that you can avoid this situation. Gap insurance is available for people who might find themselves with this scenario. This will cover the difference between what your car is physically worth to the insurance company and the amount outstanding on the car loan. This insurance isn?t widely advertised but can be a godsend for people who buy cars with car finance and then either get their car stolen or written off. It means that you won?t find yourself out of pocket as the Gap insurance you took out will cover all your financial losses. Another way you can try to protect yourself is to get PPI, payment protection insurance. This will cover you if you are unable to work due to the accident and so are unable to pay your car loan.
Getting car finance is a good idea to enable you to buy the car you really want but you should always be aware of the pitfalls including what happens if you have an accident in a car you are buying on finance. As explained however, even in this case there are ways to avoid losing out financially.

Returning from humankind's first solo dive to the deepest spot in the ocean, filmmaker James?Cameron said he saw no obvious signs of life that might inspire creatures in his next "Avatar" movie but was awestruck by the "complete isolation."
Skip to next paragraph Director James Cameron dove 6.8 miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, the deepest dive in 50 years by any man.
The Oscar-winning director and undersea explorer said his record-setting expedition to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, 7 miles beneath the surface of the western Pacific, not only capped seven years of painstaking preparation but was the "culmination of a lifelong dream."
Cameron, 57, spoke to reporters in a telephone conference call from a yacht en route back to shore from the dive site hours after returning safely to the surface from his voyage to the floor of the immense undersea canyon at a point some 300 miles (480 miles) southwest of the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam.

He described a flat, desolate landscape, 50 times larger than the Grand Canyon, "devoid of sunlight, devoid of any heat, any warmth," where the pressure was so great that it squeezed the height of his submersible vehicle by several inches.
He looked out on the sea floor, illuminated by the lights on his submarine, through a small window.
"When I got to the bottom ... it was completely featureless and uniform," he said. "My feeling was one of complete isolation from all of humanity. ... More than anything, (it's) realizing how tiny you are down in this big, vast, black, unknown and unexplored place."
The only free-swimming creatures he saw near the bottom were tiny shrimp-like arthropods, but little else in the way of life was immediately visible. Cameronsaid further exploration would be required to discern what other organisms might dwell there.
Asked if he encountered anything he might use in his next feature film, he replied, "I can't answer that question right now." But he said, "Anything that I've ever seen underwater goes into the hopper of imagination that gets refracted out into the things that I write."
He also recounted the discomfort of his seven-hour journey into the ocean depths and back, wedged into a cramped, cold capsule at the bottom of a specially designed vehicle that stands 24 feet tall and descends upright and rotating at the speed of about 500 feet per minute.
The craft functioned flawlessly, he said, except for an unexplained failure of the hydraulic system that idled the vehicle's robot arm and prevented Cameron from collecting most of the biological and geologic samples he had hoped to retrieve.
NOT GIVING UP MOVIES
Better known as the director of such blockbuster films as "Titanic," "Aliens" and "Avatar," Cameron made history on Monday as the first person to venture alone to the so-called Challenger Deep, the lowest-known point of the Earth's crust, nearly 36,000 feet beneath the ocean surface.
He also was the first individual to make that journey since 1960, when the only other explorers to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench - U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh and the late Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard - spent 20 minutes there together in the submersible craft Trieste.
Cameron said he was inspired as a boy by the original feat of Piccard and Walsh - a mentor and part of his support team at the surface - and by the adventures of French undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, to take up diving at age 16, even though he lived "in a small, landlocked village in rural Canada."
"Most people probably know me as a filmmaker, but really the ocean and the idea of exploration has been the stronger driver in my life," he said.
By his count, Cameron has made 72 ocean dives in various submersible crafts over the years, including 12 trips during the making of "Titanic" to the famed shipwreck in the North Atlantic.
Still,?Cameron insisted he had no plans to give up his movie career, saying, "I'm going to be turning my attention to 'Avatar 2' and 'Avatar 3' as soon as I finish up with this expedition."
His venture to the Challenger Deep is being chronicled for a 3-D film set for theatrical release and for subsequent broadcast on the National Geographic Channel.

Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) and Don Draper (Jon Hamm) in a scene from the first episode of the new season of "Mad Men."
By Tim Molloy , The Wrap
NEW YORK -- AMC's season five premiere of "Mad Men" scored the show's biggest audience yet, as 3.5 million viewers tuned in after the show's 17-month absence.
The show's two-hour premiere, beginning at 9 p.m., was the first in the history of "Mad Men." In the 18-49 demographic most coveted by advertisers, it had 1.6 million viewers, up 30 percent from the season four premiere. Among 25-54 year-olds, it was up 17 percent to 1.7 million.
The show took twice as long as usual to return between seasons, in part because of grueling contract negotiations between "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner, AMC, and Lionsgate, which produces the show. In a statement Monday, AMC president Charlie Collier suggested the contentious days were far in the past.
"For each of the five 'Mad Men' seasons, Matthew Weiner and his team have crafted a beautifully told story and each season a larger audience has responded; a rare accomplishment," he said. "We couldn't be more proud of this program, the brilliant writers, cast and crew, and the entire team on each side of the camera."
Weiner's deal to return to the series -- the only one to win four consecutive Emmys for best drama -- will carry it through its seventh and final season.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.(CBSNewYork) - Some animals belong in a zoo ? not in your home. Nevertheless, the lure of the exotic entices some people to take in pets that start out small and then grow to be gigantic and potentially dangerous.
Such is the reason for Exotic Animal Amnesty Day at Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, Connecticut on March 31. The event will be run by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
WCBS 880?S Sean Adams reports
Possessing such potentially harmful animals can lead to charges and fines, and there?s a dedicated police unit that tracks down these illegal pets.
?They have gone into people?s homes and taken out alligators, caimans, large snakes ? all kinds of interesting reptiles,? Dennis Shane with Connecticut?s DEEP said. ?And occasionally, it will be small, like serval cats, and other small wild cats.?
The purpose of the gathering on the 31st is to get owners to give up their illegal exotic pets in a safe, convenient environment. No questions will be asked once an owner?s pet is handed in.
Owners of illegal pets are instructed to hold on to them until Amnesty Day, as opposed to reaching out to DEEP beforehand.

Ancient humans have changed the landscape around their settlements in such ways that even today archaeologists can distinguish between "lived in" spots and those never occupied by humans.

Now, two scientists have figured out a more efficient way of locating these sites, via their footprints, from space.
The scientists relied on two distinct features of ancient settlements in the Near East: soils altered by human activity and?little hills that formed over time as residents successively built on top of older structures. By examining satellite images for these two features, they have found evidence of about 9,500 possible human settlements across an area of 8,880 square miles (23,000 square kilometers) in northern Mesopotamia, located in the northeast of modern Syria.?
Data recorded by satellites as they orbit the Earth has been?used in archaeological surveys before.
However, this new survey, produced by looking at soil and mounds, is "to the best of our knowledge, the largest systematic satellite-imagery-based survey in archaeology," they write in a study published March 19 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Clustered settlements built on artificial mounds appeared along this northern edge of the Fertile Crescent around 7000 B.C. Buildings were made of mud brick, with new buildings constructed on top of the remains of older ones. As a result, the settlements grew upward from the alluvial plains for hundreds or thousands of years, so long as they were occupied, according to the researchers. Large mounds?are called Tells.
So far, mounds left by ancient settlements in the Near East have received little attention, according to Bjoern Menze, a research affiliate in MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory?and Jason Ur, an associate professor of anthropology at Harvard University. But the mounds are key to the technique they devised. [Aerial Photos Reveal Mysterious Stone Structures]
Soil provides the other defining feature of ancient settlements. Soils at these sites are lighter, finer and composed of more organic material than the surrounding soils, according to Menze and Ur. They first used a computer algorithm to look for these changes. As a result, they found more than 14,000 potential sites.
When they looked at the volume of the settlement site ? reflected by the size of the mound ? about 9,500 sites had a significant elevation above the ground. The researchers interpreted the size of a mound as evidence of how attractive it was as a settlement site, with larger mounds being able to attract and sustain residents for a longer time.??
Using this approach to look at large areas all at once, it may be possible to explore how environmental factors ??like water availability?? influenced ancient human settlements in the Near East, they write.??
